and software infrastructure that provides connectivity between

computers.

In contrast, the Web is one of the services communicated via the

Internet. It is a collection of interconnected documents and other

resources, linked by hyperlinks and URLs.

Online social networking websites are known as social sites.

They function like an online community of internet users.  These

online community members share a common interest such

as hobbies, religion, or politics.

Once you are granted access to a social networking website you

can begin to socialize.  This socialization may include reading the

profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting

them.

It involves grouping specific individuals

or organizations together.

Page 15: The Internet N U

The websites without a main focus are often referred to as "traditional" social

networking websites and usually have open memberships. This means that

anyone can become a member, no matter what their hobbies, beliefs, or views

are. However, once you are inside this online community, you can begin to

create your own network of friends and eliminate members that do not share

common interests or goals.

Common sites include MySpace, FriendWise, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360,

Facebook, Orkut, and Classmates

Page 16: The Internet N U

Like Social Networking sites that are used to connect to other individuals

around the world there are sites that are used for the sole purpose of

professional networking.

or contact other individuals in the same or different profession to their

profile.

We bookmark sites on our browsers by going to the “add to favourites” or

“bookmark” for our personal use – but what if we want to share these sites

with others?

It is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage

bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata.

Here, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or

share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately,

shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain

networks, or another combination of public and private domains.

Most social bookmark services encourage users to organize their

bookmarks with informal tags instead of the traditional browser-based

system of folders.

Page 18: The Internet N U

They also enable viewing bookmarks associated with a chosen tag, and

include information about the number of users who have bookmarked

them. Some social bookmarking services also draw inferences from the

relationship of tags to create clusters of tags or bookmarks.

Some common and well known social bookmarking sites are Reddit, Digg,

Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Technorati to name a few..

updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into

one place.

The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's URL into the reader or

by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process.

The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work,

downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to

monitor and read the feeds.
