2011 Statistics* of Canadian Exports in Canadian dollars (1)

• Canadian commercial service exports account for 8.2% of total Canadian exports, had a $3554 million surplus;

• Canadian intellectual property (IP) license exports account for 6.4% of total Canada’s commercial service exports, had a $6990 million deficit;

• Canadian intellectual property (IP) license export deficit offset the surpluses in Computer and information services and in R&D export, as a whole;

• Canadian patent and industrial design license exports account for 47.7% of total Canada’s IP exports, had $2483 million deficit.

• The US Market accounts for: 61.3% of total Canada’s commercial service exports,

and 16.3% of commercial service export surpluses;54.2% of total Canada’s IP license exports, and

85.1% of IP license export deficits; 42.3% of total Canada’s patent and industrial

design license exports, and 89.9% of patent and industrial design license export deficits;

• In 2012, Canadian patent and industrial design license exports to the US were estimated CAD$811.32 million.

• But Canada is not among the top five US Royalties and License Fees import country.

Canadian Patent Landscape in the US Market

• Ontario is the largest US patent hub province;• In Ontario, Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo CMA,

Ottawa-Gatineau CMA and Markham municipality are the top 3 US patent hosting geographical areas respectively (normalized by population);

• The US patent gaining of Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo CMA grows steadily.
