Disney is hoping that The BFG can recoup some of its cost when it opens in more markets, but it's very unlikely that the picture will be saved by international performance. Image source: Disney. The BFG

Resurgence was made on a reported production budget of $165 million, and will likely lose money for Fox.Image source: Fox.Independence Day: Resurgence

Alice Through the Looking Glass2010's Alice in Wonderland rode strong 3D ticket sales to a worldwide gross of over $1 billion, setting up big expectations for Through the Looking Glass. With a gross of roughly $260 million, Looking Glass will post one of the biggest drop-offs between series entries ever. Image source: Disney.

Alice Through the Looking GlassThrough the Looking Glass's estimated production budget of $170 million suggests Disney took a sizable loss on the picture, and it's unlikely that the company will pursue additional entries in the series.Image source: Disney.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows2014's Turtles reboot grossed roughly $424 million, but sequel Out of the Shadows has earned less than $200 million roughly a month after release. Image source:Viacom.

With a reported production budget of $135 million, Out of the Shadows will fall far short of recouping costs and will likely kill off this iteration of the Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Gods of EgyptLions Gate's Gods of Egypt was reportedly made on a production budget of $140 million, and managed just over $31 million in ticket sales at American theaters.Image source: Lions Gate

Gods of EgyptGods of Egypt went on to gross roughly $145 million internationally, putting it squarely in the losers' column. Lions Gate's exposure to the losses was limited, having spent only $10 million on the co-production after tax breaks, but the picture's performance looks even worse after the company's Divergent: Allegiant also flopped. What do the BFG and Alice flops mean for Disney?

Big underperformance for BFG and Alice Through the Looking Glass are certainly disappointing for Disney. Alice in particular looked like it could be a viable franchise after very strong performance for the first film.

Even so, overperformance for the company's Zootopia and The Jungle Book and strong sales for Finding Dory and Captain America: Civil War mean Disney is still having a great year at the movies.

What does Resurgence mean for Fox?

Successfully reintroducing the Independence Day series represented a significant opportunity for Fox, but poor performance for Resurgence makes it likely that the franchise be shelved for a while, if not abandoned entirely.

The poor showing for Resurgence is even more disappointing in light of soft sales for X-Men: Apocalypse. Fox needs strong film performance, but some of its most important movie properties are faltering.

What does Gods of Egypt mean for Lions Gate?

Lions Gate will not take a big loss on Gods of Egypt, but the picture's soggy reception highlights the company's weakening franchise slate. The company and its stock soared for years on hit adaptations of young-adult book franchises, but with The Hunger Games series concluded and the Divergent series losing steam, Lions Gate is in need of new hit properties.

What does the Turtles flop mean for Viacom?

Viacom has indicated that it will depend more on its film wing in coming years as a result of declining performance for its television networks.

Outside of the Transformers and Mission: Impossible series, the company is short on big movie franchises, so a poor showing for the most recent Turtles movie is a notable setback after solid performance from its prequel.
