E. Generation of New Techniques

Page 6: Ten Years of Horticulture Research in BRAC (Bangladesh)

A. Variety Screening

• Imported seeds of cole crops & hybrid varieties of other crops are identified & suitable varieties are recommended for marketing.

• Adaptive trial experiments are also conducted in other farms.

• Multiseasonal trial experiments are also conducted to identify the suitable growing season.

• Suitable varieties are chosen and recommendations are made for the marketing department to ensure their availability to the growers in proper season.

B. Variety Development

• Improved varieties (F1 hybrid & OP) of different vegetable crops are being developed.

• Since most of the vegetable crops are cross pollinated, hybrids can be developed easily.

• Improved OP varieties are developed from crops –where application of hybrid technique is difficult.

• Some uncommon varieties like red okra, red spinach, white pumpkin & summer country bean etc. have also been developed.

Future Strategy•New stress tolerant short duration nutritious vegetable varieties will be developed to combat hidden hunger and malnutrition.

• Research priorities will also be given to develop off-season or extra early season value added vegetables.

•Development of suitable varieties which can fit easily in the existing cropping pattern and diverse farming system.

Page 48: Ten Years of Horticulture Research in BRAC (Bangladesh)

Contd.• Sustainable technologies of fresh vegetable

production as well as seed production will also be strengthened.

• Due importance will also be given on the improvement of indigenous vegetable and steps will be taken for their incorporation in the healthy diet.

• BRAC is also committed to disseminate the new sustainable vegetable cultivation techniques and good quality vegetable seeds.
