AQUAPONIC & HYDROPONICSGARDENING
Hydroponics
What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics means simply growing plants in water without soil.
The plants are placed in growing media such as rockwool, clay pellets, foam,
recycled foam, gravel, peat, sawdust, or coconut fibers, then fed a nutrient solution
to make them grow.
Since many hydroponic methods employ some type of growing medium these
methods are often termed "soilless culture", while water culture alone is true
hydroponics.
The basic advantage is that you don't have to worry about choice of soil, since it
isn't required. This eliminates all the soil-related problems.
One can achieve an economical nutrient supply and save on related costs.
One has greater control over the supply of nutrients, than in a soil-based
environment.
Proven high yields are testimony to the advantage it offers over conventional
soil-based gardening or farming.
Excessive nutrient pollution, that often occurs in soil-based systems is avoided.
Plant-related diseases and pests can be eliminated more easily due to the
water-based culture and the inherent mobility that the technique offers.
Using these systems, one can have vegetation where natural soil does not
support it or is not conducive to its growth.
Hydroponics Advantages
Aquaponics
Is a sustainable and natural form of agriculture
The term Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (fish
farming) and hydroponics (soilless plant culture)
The fish and plants live in separate parts of the system
The fish provide organic nutrients, while the plants filter the
water for the fish
What is Aquaponics?
Why Aquaponics?
Advantages over conventional farming techniques: Produces 4 to 10 times more vegetables Uses 90% less water
In an urban environment, it can be implemented on roof tops, vertical structures, open spaces etc.
Only inputs are fish food and electricity (for the water and air pumps)
Completely Organic. No harmful pesticides or fertilizers used.
Aquaponics… providing a double guarantee for farmers — income through fish and vegetables As a hobby that will help meet household needs, the farmer
can start with 500 kgs of fish in a pond with 10,000 liters of
water in about 250 sq ft. area (approx. ¼ guntha)
For commercial operations, a minimum of 1750 sq ft. (approx
1.5 guntha) is needed, along with 5,000 kg of fish and 50,000
liters of water
