Summary Online Statistics: Key Statistics

• 38.3 million Adults were found to be Internet users (60% of the population)*– The majority of internet users have an ABC1 profile aged 25 to 64 with a slight bias towards males^– A mature audience is helping to drive online take up with an additional one million people aged 55+ now

online compared to 2009^– 9.2 million Adults have never accessed the internet (small decrease from 2009)*

• 30.1 million Adults accessed the internet every day or almost every day*– 92% of the UK online population now has broadband^– 72% of peak usage time for online users occurs between 16:00-17:00^– Social networks/blogs now account for around 23% of all time spent online in the UK^

• 31 million adults bought or ordered goods or services online within the last 12 months; the most popular products bought online were clothes and sporting goods*

– Note: online cart abandonment costs retailers £2.7bn each year in lost sales, with almost two-thirds of this due to delivery related factors+

• 19.2 million Households were found to have internet connection representing 73 per cent of households.*

– Regionally, London has the highest level of internet access (83%) and the North East the lowest (59%)*– 3G dongles, smartphones, iPads, netbooks and eReaders are driving always-on connectivity^– 45% of people used a mobile device (eg laptop, mobile phone, or palmtop) to access the Internet

wirelessly; 5% increase from 2009.– The adoption of mobile phone technology is being led by 16 to 24-year-old Internet users, with 44 per

cent using a mobile phone to access the Internet.

• 17 million adults used the Internet to watch television or listen to the radio in 2010*
