• From the three analysis' I have done on the trailers 'The Strangers' 'Devil' and 'Insidious' I have found some similar conventions in each of the film trailers. The first was the establishing shot used to introduce the setting.

• Usually, this shot would show an isolated spot, like it does in the 'The Strangers', this has a great effect because the isolated shot suggests that the protagonists are far away and so more vulnerable.

• However, in 'Insidious' this shows the family home; this suggests that the setting, the family and how they live is perfectly normal. This helps to build a relationship with the main characters as you see they are just a stereotypical family that are happy, but also creates fear in the audience as they realise that the frightening events happen to normal people and makes them believe it could happen to them.

• Fast paced editing is also a main convention that I have found to be in all three of the film trailers. The fast paced editing helps to build tension and add suspense in the audience, keeping them on edge and wanting to watch more. Also the fast paced editing makes the scenes harder to focus on, meaning the audience needs to pay more attention to the film trailer to grasp what is going on.

• Elements of slow paced editing were found in the trailers, this again builds suspense but in a different way to how fast paced editing does. It creates tension because it makes it seem as though time is going very slowly.

• The slow paced editing builds suspense by making it feel like something is coming; the slower it is, it makes time feel like it is going slower, imitating the feeling the protagonists feel when they don’t know what might happen.

• Mise-en-scene conventions in all three trailers are low key lighting and dark dull clothes. The low key lighting reflects on the negative atmosphere, often suggesting night time making the setting seem more isolated and making the characters more vulnerable.

• The dark clothing is often found on the villain of the film. Theses connote evil, mystery, danger and death. The dark mysterious clothing also suggests that that character has the upper hand and is more intimidating because they do no know anything of the antagonist.

• The soundtrack of each trailer was stereotypically high pitched and fast paced. The non diegetic soundtrack seemed to get faster as the trailer progressed suggesting the events were getting worse. It also helps to build tension and suspense as it creates and eerie atmosphere in the audience.

• Another main feature of the three film trailers I looked at was text that comes up on the screen. Most commonly it would say “based on true events” or “from the makers of…” used to create anxiety in the audience.
