GovLoop Mentors Program
Spring 2013 Concluding Celebration
Andrew Krzmarzick, GovLoop
Congratulations, Participants!
You successfully completed our government-wide mentoring program!
Tonight’s Agenda
• Networking with your colleagues
• Revealing and receiving program feedback
• Reflecting on lessons learned and success stories
• Wrapping up the formal mentoring process
Mentors: Was the program effective in strengthening your ability to mentor and
assist rising government leaders?
100% = Yes! (Last two programs = 75% and 85%)
Why?
“Both mentoring relationships went extremely well. Here's how I worked the mentoring relationship: • After the opening introductory session/
conversations, I basically set the stage and passed the baton to the mentees for future sessions.
• I gave them the responsibility for setting up future sessions via email and encouraged them to pre-identify a topic of discussion for the scheduled session.
• Both of my mentees really responded well to this approach and they both came with excellent, work or career-related topics that set the stage for rich 45 minute to one hour discussions.”
Mentors: Did the program give you an opportunity to give back and feel like
you made a difference?
87% = Yes!
Mentors: Give you a sense of optimism about the future of government?

Program: Improvements?
• What are your top-level recommendations?
• How can we make the program even better?
• What additional support or resources could we provide to enhance the program (i.e. Mentoring Connection Tools, blogs, emails, etc.)?
Program: Improvements?
“I can not remember how I came across the program, but I get the sense that this program is not widely known. Perhaps better marketing to let more federal employees know that this exists…”
How can we market it more effectively?
Program: Improvements?
“Who's Got Your Back by Keith Ferrazzi was a great book that I think would be helpful in terms of shaping the mentoring program moving forward.”
Pairings: Impressions?
• Did you accomplish your mentoring goals?
• What did you appreciate most about your pairing?
• How have you helped each other grow?
Mentees: Specific Gains and Successes • “I've really begun to think about the difference between leadership vs.
managing, what that looks like and means to me, and how to shift between the two as needed. I've also received great tips and anecdotes from my mentor based on his experiences in managing and leading and finding a work-life balance as career opportunities grow.”
• “I feel like I've made a friend in the government (my mentor), and the experience has reinforced my confidence in the value of working for the federal government.”
• “I developed a very important series of new contacts that directly relate
to my fields of interest. I also was able to connect with one of my mentor's former employees, who now works at the firm I will be joining later next month. This former employee was able to help me prepare for the interview. I have also grown more confident in my ability to make decisions regarding my career and have learned much about the art of negotiation.”
Mentors: Specific Gains and Successes
• “My protégé was making the transition from intern to an actual fulltime employee. Our sessions focused on being more assertive and allowing her to believe that she has more of a role as a full time employee. Also, ensuring that she felt that she could make an impact on processes within the office and provide input to Agency directives.”
• “We focused on my mentee’s personal life and created a balance
between work and play that allowed her to feel more satisfied at her job. Also, we focused on getting performance feedback from other areas within her job so that she did not have to totally rely on her immediate supervisors assessment of her skills.”
Overall: Do you plan to continue an informal mentoring relationship?
97% = Yes!
