ATEX is the name given to the laws for controlling explosive atmospheres, standards of equipment and the protective systems used in them, based on the requirements of two European directives.

What should you look out for?Make sure you are using kit bearing the Ex Hexagon mark. Throughout this directory we have labelled ATEX approved equipment with a zone hexagon to indicate which zone it is approved for use in.

What are the zones?

What is ATEX?

The first (ATEX 137 Directive 1999/92/EC) makes it a legal requirement to assess for an explosion risk and classify the area accordingly.

The second (ATEX Directive 94/9/EC) makes it a legal requirement that once an area has been formally classified as potentially explosive, only electrical and mechanical equipment that has been formally certified can be used.

What must the employer do?If the presence of explosive atmospheres cannot be avoided then they must prevent explosion – this includes the use of appropriate Ex certified equipment that will avoid ignition.

Where explosive atmospheres may occur, the area must be classified into hazardous and non-hazardous workplaces; the hazardous areas should then be classified into zones and identified in the workplace risk assessment.

Working in a hazardous area?Ex marks a place where an explosive atmosphere may occur. Consult the employer’s risk assessment to find out what zone you are working in and then use the appropriate certified equipment for the zone.

0 1 2

0 A place in which an explosive gas is continuously 20 present, present for long periods or present frequently.

1 A place which an explosive gas mixture is likely to 21 occur in normal operation occasionally.

2 A place which an explosive gas mixture is not likely

to occur in normal operation, but if it does occur will 22 persist for a short period only.

Zones 0, 1 and 2 apply to gas; zones 20, 21 and 22 are the equivalent for the presence of dust. All ATEX approved equipment is categorised by the maximum zone for which it is suitable. If an item is zone 1 approved it is therefore suitable for use in both zone 1 and 2.

Is it worth the risk? ATEX equipment guarantees you keep it safe.

Why hire ATEX Equipment?

Hiring ensures you are using the right equipment for the job. In this blame-claim culture it makes sense to protect your company by using the safest kit available.

ATEX equipment is more expensive to purchase than equivalent non ATEX electrical products and capital investment is a risk, but safety of your employees should never be - hiring is the answer.

Well maintained and ready for use, all our safety equipment is rigorously tested and issued with a certificate of conformity or calibration before every hire, traceable to an ISO 9001 accredited system.

Meeting the demands of increasing legislation requires more sophisticated solutions onsite. Hiring the most up-to-date equipment ensures you are exceeding legal requirements.
