Soil Nailing Can Have Some Soil Nailing Can Have Some Advantages But Also Some Advantages But Also Some
LimitationsLimitationsSoil nailing is meant to make soil stable in places where landslides may occur. Soil nails are inserted to provide steel reinforcement bars into the soil; when they anchored into the strata of the soil, they can help prevent landslides. The soil nail is called as such because it resembles a nail that is hammered into the soil, except that the nails are in the form of steel bars.
Soil nails are necessary for the construction of caissons. A caisson is a watertight retaining structure that can serve as a foundation for a bridge pier or a dam. Caissons are designed to pump out the water and make sure that the working environment is dry. A soil nail can provide the resisting force to prevent slope failures.
The process involved in installing a soil nail is relatively quick. It involves seven steps:
1 – excavation2 - drilling 3 – installation of steel soil nails bars plus grouting4 – placement of shotcrete5 – excavation of the next level6 – repetition of steps 1 to 4, and finally 7 - finishing the facing so that it resembles the local
geology. Soil nailing may be great for caissons and other building
requirements that have tight and irregular spaces. It provides fewer traffic obstructions and minimally impacts the surrounding areas. Soil nails can eliminate the need to place steel pipes, too. However, soil nailing may not be the best for gravel and sand, high water table areas, and expansive or sensitive soils.
