Maybe you’ve heard of the General Motors employee that tweeted about traffic in Detroit . Dropping the F-bomb during a tweet isn’t the only concern businesses face.

It’s hard to find a phone that doesn’t have a camera. We’ve all pulled our phone out to take a few selfies or snap a photo of an event but when employees are doing this with a company device, during a holiday party…where there’s alcohol…You’re starting to get the picture. (pun intended)

Employees that post to their personal social media accounts using their company device run the risk of directly linking their social updates to their employer.

Depending on your industry, if employees are using their personal social media account to discuss work related information, they could be breaking confidentiality, breaching their contract or both.

Besides the obvious privacy violations, your business could lose its competitive advantage (think of the new axiom: Loose fingertips sink ships), not to mention the damage that may be done to your corporate reputation.

Data leaks, data breaches, and data theft oh my!

These things are happening with increasing frequency. It’s no wonder then that about 38 percent of companies plan to phase out their mobile device programs in 2016; instead opting to have employees provide their own device for work purposes. We can also expect that reimbursements for associated costs will decline.

WHAT!???

Yes, while it may be a cost saving initiative, the risks of letting employees use their own device for work opens businesses up to more risks.

Quick question: How easy is it to share documents in a “cloud”?

Ever wonder how people who should be doing their job are able to update their status, comment on all of the updates from their friends and family, suggest that you read a certain book or article by tagging you in a post etc.?

Multi-tasking is a myth.

Seriously. It has been proven that our brains are not that special. We are still using our lizard brains to tackle one project at a time.

Not only is the social media addict costing a business productivity, if their using a company device, they’re opening the floodgates for viruses and malware.
