Seed is an important input for augmenting agricultural production in

different agro-climatic regions. Thailand agricultural sector has

played a major role in the economic development of the country. The

agricultural sector of Thailand is mainly led by small scale producers

of agricultural products, which accounts for nearly one third of the 70

million population of Thailand as of 2013. Thailand Seed industry is

mainly dominated by cereal seeds such as Rice seeds, Maize seeds

which are followed by pulses such as beans and other pulses seeds.

The Thailand seed industry is dominated by the informal distribution

channel which comprises of local farmers, agents and other

intermediaries in the market. The domestic seed producers in the

country comprise of small scale farmers, cooperatives and companies

who produce seeds at small scales as compared to the capital

intensive large scale seed producers. The domestic players majorly

sell saved seeds in the market. The saved seeds from the domestic

seed producers are then forwarded to the wholesalers and the

distributors.

Thailand seed sector is highly preferred by

the international seed companies for

research and development of new plant

varieties and improve the yield of existing

ones. Thailand seed industry, valued at USD

~ million in 2013, has been showcasing a

CAGR of ~% during the period 2008-2013.

The increased adoption of single cross corn

hybrids, hybrid vegetables, cultivation of

other crops such as oilseeds, barley in the

country has driven the growth of the market

over the last few years.

Rice is an indispensable part of the diet of Thai

population. It is one of the major crops grown in the

country. Thailand is the 24th largest seed exporter in the

world and is the 3rd largest exporter in Asia after Japan

and China. Rice seed market in Thailand has showcased a

considerable growth in the past few years. The rice seeds

in the country were to be produced maximum by the

local farmers through paddy fields which are mostly not

certified as they were only responsible to develop and

produce seeds earlier before the inception of private and

other rice producing centers. Local farmers were

expected to produce around 455 thousand tons of rice in

Thailand.

Thailand rice seed market is further subdivided by

types of rice seeds which showcase different

varieties of rice seed types such as KDML, RD.6

and Chainart1,2. It is also segregated in the form

of market structure as to the seeds produced by

farmers, community rice centers, and government

cooperatives. It has also been further segmented

in the form of seed certification with certified,

informal certified seeds and non certified seeds.

Non certified seeds are mostly sold in Thailand as

most of the seeds are produced by local farmers

who do not get their seeds certified.

Now the conventional seeds are continuously

being replaced by the hybrid seeds in agriculture

as hybrid seeds tend to generate more yield than

the conventional or the normal seeds. The hybrid

seeds generate yields five to six times more than

the normal or the conventional seeds but it also

costs more than the normal seeds. Hybrid seeds

are the first generation offspring of two distant

and distinct parental lines of the same species. It

is one of the main contributors to the dramatic

rise in agricultural output during the last half of

the 20th century.
