ONE SEEN CHALLENGE IN MODULAR CONSTRUCTION"One weakness of modular building that was pointed out was the stiffness and lack of expression of the architectural design. In interviews that were conducted, it was thought that modular solutions could not offer a wide range of different solutions

and that the architectural design lost its freedom. However, interviewees also believed that whilst the method of modular building could lead to "eye-catching" solutions, a deviation from the basic solution was seen to lead to incurring extra cost. The constraints of the module sizes highlighted the suspicion that there is no possibility to build large family apartments using this building method. The

interviewees expressed that in their experience, Finnish authorities have a certain fear of the monotony of modular building, and had to be convinced more than

usual that the building also seemed appropriate from the outside. The authorities also raised the query if modular construction can be designed from the point of view

of resident needs or it was directed only from the practical construction points of transport and dimension limits."
