Qantas: Background• Australia’s flag carrier airline.• Its previous name was QANTAS, an acronym for

Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.• Nicknamed The Flying Kangaroo; biggest airline in

Australia, the oldest continuously operated airline in the world, and the second oldest in the world as a whole.

• Based in the Qantas Centre in the suburb of Mascot in the City of Botany Bay in Sydney, with its main hub at Sydney Airport; its other two hubs are at Melbourne Airport and Brisbane Airport.

• Claims a 65% share of the Australian domestic market; also carries 18.7% of all passengers travelling in and out of Australia.

Qantas: History• Founded in Winton, Queensland on 16 November

1920 as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited.

• Its first aircraft was an Avro 504K.• Flew internationally after May 1935, when it began

service from Darwin, Northern Territory to Singapore.

• Entered the jet age when the first Boeing 707-138 was delivered in June 1959.

Qantas: Headquarters • The headquarters of Qantas are located in the Qantas

Centre in the Mascot suburb of the City of Botany Bay, Sydney, New South Wales.

• Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Ltd has its headquarters in Winton, Queensland in 1920.

• The head office moved to Longreach, Queensland in 1921, but moved to Brisbane in 1930.

• A head office, Qantas House, opened along Hunter Street in Sydney in 1957.

• A new A$50 million headquarters in the 1970s, with twin skyscrapers, was being constructed in Sydney and anticipated to occupy one city block.

• The first and biggest tower had its anticipated completion time in 1973.

Qantas: Qantas Freight• Subsidiary company of Qantas, responsible for the air

cargo operations of the Qantas group.• Owner of freight airline Express Freighters Australia,

freight forwarder Qantas Courier, and trucking company Jets Transport Express.

• Was also a partner in two joint ventures with Australia Post: Australian air Express and specialised in door-to-door package delivery, and Star Track Express, a road freight company.

• Fully purchased Australia air Express in November 2012, depriving its shareholding in Star Track to Australia Post.

• Also owned Asian-based freight forwarder DPEX Worldwide until that company was bought by its rival, Toll Holdings, in 2010.
