Primary Data

Primary data is data that you collect directly.

If you use a machine to measure the current temperature, this is primary data collection.

MET office data is Primary data when used by the MET office.

Secondary Data

Secondary data is where someone else collects the data.

It is data that someone else has collected and can then be used by you.

For example the BBC may get their weather data from the MET office to publish on their website – this is secondary data.
