What’s the problem?

The problem is that there are not enough dikes in Holland. Another problem is that the dikes are not strong enough to hold the water. We need more and stronger dikes, When this is not going to happen the Netherlands will be a lot smaller.

Where is this situation exact?

This situation is a big problem in Zeeland.

Zeeland was in 1953 the part of The Netherlands where the flood took place.

They are busy now with a new Delta Plan.

What is the cause of the problem?

• We need to build more dikes and make them stronger because of the global warming.

• We need to be more careful with the nature, because we become in danger if we don’t!

• The water level will rise, and we have to build more dikes and make them stronger.

What are the exact results?

• The exact results are that we can’t be sure about our safety.

• If we don’t build stronger dikes we probebly will drown.

• The government has to give lots of money to make stronger dikes and investigation of existing dikes.

What’s happend in 1953?

• In the night of 31 Januari on 1 Februari 1953 spring-tide and the northwestern storm pushed all the northsea water up to record hight! Big parts of Zeeland flooded and more than 1800 people and animals died. More than 100.000 people lost there homes and property.

What are we doing now, to protect our country?

• The rijkswaterstaat is busy to make the dikes to the current security standard adapt 1:4000. This means that the dikes after these adaptations could handle an extreem heavy storm and high water. Since 1953 the dikes in the Netherlands have no longer broken through. But this does not means that we can trust on the dikes blindly. For this reason the dikes are systematically checked regularly.

Why do we need dikes?

• We need dikes because else we will drown! Our country is below the sea level, so when there are no dikes, around 40% of our country will be under water. (Most of this are the big cities, where lots of people live!) So we need the dikes to protect us from the water.
