Trashcam Project Uses Dumpsters As CamerasFour German sanitation workers and one photographer put their skills together for an

unconventional art endeavor called the Trashcam Project, turning 1,000 liter dumpsters into

giant, makeshift cameras. Fitting the bins with with pinhole cameras, the group toured their

favorite spots in Hamburg, capturing stunning black-and-white photographs of the city.

Pinhole cameras are relatively crude in the world of photography, but take an astute understanding of

light and focus to be successful. Their construction is simple; a single small aperture camera without

a lens that captures images via light streaming through a tiny hole in an otherwise light-proof box. The

surrounding scene is projected upside down into the box onto light sensitive paper that takes

anywhere from, six minutes to an hour to imprint depending on the lighting.

The Trashcam Project is a beautiful portrayal of Hamburg and an interesting artistic perspective from

a group of sanitation workers. Go to their Flickr page for more of their photography and for photos of

the artists themselves.

Dog Scouts Of America Have Troops In 22 States The Scouts have two mottos. For humans: "Our dogs' lives are much shorter than our own. We

should help them enjoy their time with us as much as we can." For dogs: "Let us learn new things that

we become more helpful.“ The organization was founded by Lonnie Olson 13 years ago. Membership

is $25 a year. There are 682 Dog Scouts who belong to 38 troops across the country. The

organization has around 80 badges, but not all dogs can earn all badges. Dogs are not required to

earn badges beyond the first one, for basic obedience and appropriately called the Dog Scout badge.

Many badges are earned in camp. In the water, dogs can be puppy paddlers, beach buddies or

boaters. They can qualify in rescue, racing or retrieval. A pair of Dog Scouts who started dock diving

in camp have gone on to compete nationally. The earth dog badge, mostly for terriers, is awarded if a

dog stays focused while chasing a (protected) rat into an 8-foot earth tunnel, negotiates a 90-degree

turn and continues the chase through another 8-foot tunnel without losing interest in the quarry.

Glamour's Shoppable WallAs part of its contribution to Fashion Week, Glamour Magazine

adorned a wall in New York's Meatpacking District with

products that could be bought by anyone with a smartphone.

The "Glamour Apothecary Wall" used SnapTags, a type of

scannable code which appeared next to a range of beauty and

personal care items from the likes of Dove and Aveeno. Once

purchased, the products ship to consumers for free. Mobile

payments provider Buck is supported transactions for both the

wall and Glamour's March issue, and pharmacist C.O. Bigelow

is the magazine's branding and fulfillment partner.

The technology was also featured in Glamour's upcoming

March issue, with 21 advertisers displaying "Buy it Now"

SnapTags next to their products. In addition to buying the ads,

readers will be able to "like" advertisers and share their

purchases on Facebook. One obstacle in the process: would-

be shoppers had to install a "Glamour Friends & Fans" app to

scan and buy products - both for the wall and the magazine

experience.

Put A Bird On It

    http://inhabitat.com/brick-biotope-at-fabrikaat-bricks-that-double-as-bird-habitats-showcased-in-milan/

Compelled by the disappearance of house sparrows due to the depletion of their natural environment, students Micaela Nardella and Oana Tudose designed Brick Biotope, a set of bricks that doubles as a habitat for birds. Shown at FABRIKAAT, a Dutch exhibition showcased in the Ventura Lambrate District for Milan Design Week, the project also does triple duty as a vertical garden.

The bricks, following the natural pattern of house sparrows, are sand-casted with cracks in them so that the birds can build nests, feed and live in those cracks. These bricks are merged into the standard brick wall, and can be a part of the building. With immense research into the material and the production process, Brick Biotope uses natural materials such as sand and plaster. The sand, acting as a moulding agent, is poured together with plaster and removed by hand after solidification, giving it the desired cracks.

Boston-based Ole Restaurant kicked off its new bike delivery service by sending out one hot guy and one hot girl dressed only in their underwear to make surprise deliveries to startled Bostonians. Smartly, the company made its deliveries to media outlets in the city with the obvious purpose of scoring some publicity.

Need a Better Facebook Ad? Show a CatWhen Red Square Agency decided to run ads on Facebook, they tested a few concepts. Some were

well-crafted and traditional. Others weren't. One ad featured a photo of an employee's cat with this

ridiculous headline: "This ad features a cat.“ The result? The cat outperformed the other ads by 39%.

Red Square's cat ad had nothing to do with their agency, but it had everything to do with what

Facebook users want, which is to be left damned alone by advertisers. Or at least, they don't want

advertisers to act like they're advertising. They want brands who will be—shocking—social.

Buffalo Wild Wings is a surprising brand to have over five million fans on Facebook, but they've

earned each one of them (with the help of Atlanta-based 22Squared) by listening to what customers

love about the restaurant and then serving it up online.

One of their strongest practices is what they call the "art of un-copywriting." In other words, they talk

to their fans like friends instead of customers. Rather than saying, "Today's a great day to try some

delicious wings from Buffalo Wild Wings," they just say, "Mmmmmmmm wings." And then they watch

as it earns 3,000+ likes and 400+ comments.
