....Go to the community
.......Live with them,
...........Learn from them
...................LOVE them
Start with what they know, build with what they have. But with the best leaders, when the work is done;the task accomplished, the people will say:

"WE HAVE DONE IT OURSELVES”

What is Community Engagement?**
Deepening our thoughts of what “engagement” is and how it differs from merelyparticipation and involvement, we have found it useful to see them as separateand distinct; and see involvement and participation as steps on the way toengagement such that:
Involvement… is about involvement in community activities in a variety of different ways.
Community involvement often starts with agenda and programmes that originate outside the
community.
Participation… is about people being active partners in the regeneration of
communities – contributing and sharing in the decisions that affect their lives.Participation should enable people to have a degree of power and control in theprocesses with which they are involved.
Engagement… is about continuous dialogue – the development
and maintenance of relationships and actions between communities andorganisations where decisions, are shared and based on mutual andgrowing understanding; and actions are accountable, transparent andmeaningful.

When people involve themselves in the services provided by
their duty-bearers, they benefit to fill their NEED
When claim-holders participate in decision-making processes,
they are claiming fulfillment of their HUMAN RIGHTS
When claim-holders engage with their duty-bearers,
their NEEDS are filled and HUMAN RIGHTS fulfilled
The Response is NEEDS-based
The Response is RIGHTS-based
The Response is Relationship-based

The involvement of the community makes their role as “need-bearers” and those who provide their needs as “service providers”
The participation of the community in decision-making makes themas “claim holders” and the service providers as “duty-bearers”
The engagement between the claim-holder and the duty-bearermakes their role as “power-holders” in the response to HIV
