Where he was born:

Jooss was born in 1901 is Wasseralfingen, Germany to successful farming family

Was allowed by his parents to attend the Stuttgart Academy of the Arts for photography, drama, and singing

Education

Was introduced to Rudolph Laban after graduating the academy

Laban thought Jooss was suited to help him in his dancenotation research

Jooss was hired by Laban as a ballet master and assistant for his notation work

Laban taught Jooss his method of movement and soon allowed him to perform

Here he realized a passion for choreography

Eventually Jooss moved on to Essen to ballet master for the Opera company in 1928

He was also allowed to choreograph

By 1932 Jooss had founded his own company Ballet Jooss

In 1932 Jooss choreographed Green Table He was awarded first prize at the International choreography competition in Paris

In 1933 a warrant was placed for Jooss’ arrest by the Nazis because of his refusal to release his Jewish members from the company

The company fled and relocated to Dartington Hall in England

Jooss took his company on tour in the United States and Europe

Green Table was touted as the first anti-war ballet

Reviews from this tour reflect the powerful impact this ballet made

There were rumors that Jooss was spreading Socialism through his work but he denied this by saying his work only reflects what is happening in the world
