Design for Social Impact
Hi.
I’m Patrice.And I’m from IDEO.org.

Design for Behavior Change 6
A few years ago, foundations started to see the potential for what design and the social sector could do together.
They pushed us to investigate.
Step-by-step innovation process
A few incremental changes, not enough impact.
We needed to turn the design process on ourselves.
It’s more than changing our financial modelIt’s more than just projects
It’s the opportunity to widely share ideas, spread human-centered design and improve the lives of low-income individuals everywhere.

IDEO.org harnesses online and offline tools to share the
methodology of design thinking, foster a community to spread and build on each other’s ideas, and catalyze the
power of good storytelling.

design thinking
1. See the system
An integrated approach
OWNERSHIP = CARE
If a family feels that the toilet is theirs, it will be treated with care and cleaned.
Product, service, business + brand

SERVICE MODEL

01Branded household toilet with bio-digester chemical and removable waste container.
02Local franchised operator provides household waste collection service.
03Waste taken to neighborhood transfer tank for interim storage.
04Vacuum truck services local transfer tanks.
05Waste used to generate electricity or create fertilizer to sustain and grow local business.
details matter
2. Mix insight, inspiration and intuition
prototype the product,
recast intuition
3. Build to think
prototype the product,
prototype the business
Design sterilizable and water-proof endoscope for fistula surgery
Fistula market is small. Let’s explore 6 business models
Iterative model:Chip on tip for investorsWorking prototype for pilot
Let’s gain access to multiple endocope markets
Create a generic design that reaches 4 of the 5 largest endoscope markets
Update specification, manufacuring and assembly processes
We need to choose a specific endoscope market
Let’s put this thing together
Week 1 Week 2 Week 3
Let’s use chip on tip technology
4. Reframe the question
Question assumptions
Youth are often finding formal education doesn’t teach them the skills they need to gain employment. What if formal education isn’t the answer?
Look outside what exists
Imagine designing a new employment standard, a system where foundational skills are recognized and lead to employment.
Create an employability system that shares
vocabulary around acquiring, measuring, and
recognizing foundational skills in the labor
market.
Today, despite the fact that the formal
education system is not producing candidates
with solid foundational skills, the diploma
still acts as a proxy for employability. Formal
schools are expected to create employable
citizens, but they are graduating youth without
the right skills.
