CARTON SEALING TAPE ADHESIVE PROPERTIES
Hot Melt Adhesive Carton-Sealing Tapes offer the widest range of application flexibility available. Offer excellent processing performance whether manually or automatically applied. The superior adhesions properties holding force and tensile strength ensure a good seal on the carton. This adhesive has a quick tack property, and applies well on automatic equipment. The seal does not penetrate without a proper wipe down, so when tearing tape off a carton with this adhesive used will often not show much attachment to the carton.
Acrylic Carton-Sealing Tape is best suited for applications in temperatures less than 40°F and greater than 120°F. Providing excellent clarity, ages well over extended periods of sunlight and flourescent lighting. Features improved quick-stick performance. After applying this tape even without any wipe down, the adhesive penetrates the carton and upon removal will often take most of the substrate carton with the tape.
Natural Rubber Tape has the most aggressive adhesive available. Using solventless technology, fast, positive bonding on problem applications such as recycled content cartons, rough or ultra-smooth cartons, heavy ink coverage, dusty and/or dirty environment. This adhesive is often used in the moving and storage industry where packing is done most often by movers using no dispensers and over stretching the tape when applying. The natural rubber is capable of some elongation to keep box taped. The mover also pulls tape until it snaps to cut tape. This both over stretches tape and the snap back makes an easy to grab end to start taping the next carton.

Acrylic Carton-Sealing Tape is also available in a solvent based adhesive. This property allows for lower adhesion properties and the ability to adhere to polyethylene and polypropylene products, ie poly bags. Rule of thumb for palletizing product:
Tensile strength strap = Weight of pallet x safety factor Over ____________________________________________________ (The number of straps used to secure the load) Safety factor is normally 1.5 to 2 The safety factor relates to:
Is the customer using their own trucks or common carrier Is the shipment going across town or across the entire country Will the shipment go from one climate, Hot Eastern Washington to Alaska or to Texas
The less the safety factor the more control Example: Pallet of forms weighs 2000 pounds going across, the country from hot to cold Use 2 as the safety factor. T.S. = 2000 X 2 / the number of straps.
2 straps one direction and 2 the other crossing each other over the load. T.S. = 2000 x 2 / 4 = 1000#’s. In this case we are at the upper limits of either polypropylene or polyester strap.
When you have printed stock, it may be in flat boxes or no boxes or a pallet of plywood has a tremendous chance for load shift.
Tall boxes have a lot less load shift potential. In the load shift you need strap that has less stretch.
Stretch characteristics: Steel 1 - 2%, Polyester 3 – 5%, Polypropylene 17%+
Note on retained tension: Steel and polyester strap retain the initial amount of tension put on when applied. Polypropylene only retains 20% of the amount of tension after 48 hours. 1000# up tensile strength strap for high potential load shift and the safety factor needs to be high, then steel is the answer, ½” .020 has around 1300# tensile. One can put on more straps to reduce the tensile, but the savings may be less.
