Catalyst:Driving productivity of the connected employee

Every enterprise employee is first and foremost a consumer, so the impact of consumer information and communications technologies will affect even more businesses and institutions as the workforce engages through devices and apps in 2014.

New and novel devices will continue to meld with clever and sophisticated apps in ways that business and IT leaders have not yet been able to imagine.

When combined with new web services and experimental external data sources, the resulting IT cocktail will have unpredictable and potentially disruptive market effects.

Key messages:

The relationship between employee, IT department, and technology/services providers generates both contention and opportunity.

Employees are clamoring for next-generation collaboration solutions that embrace human-centered design and do a better job of meeting their particular needs.

Enterprise social networking products are evolving rapidly beyond the activity stream as vendors seek to differentiate their products in a crowded market.

File sync and share solutions reshape collaborative activities by making documents and application data securely available and actionable on any device.

Microsoft is attempting to find its stride as it transitions from software and services to a devices and services company: Microsoft 3.0.

The Ovum View:

Employee frustration and operational latency are increasing as the workforce tries to do today’s job with yesterday’s tools.

As a result, empowered employees are self-selecting applications on their own devices and using cloud services to get the job done.

Experienced CIOs have seen this occur once before when the PC displaced the green screen, and they are now ready to manage the transition once more: from siloed to social; programs to apps; and on-premise to cloud.

Continued growth in the use of employee-owned devices and self-selected applications is changing the face of end-user computing, and nowhere else is this more evident than in the enterprise collaboration market.

We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us.

Our Age of Anxiety is, in great part, the result of trying to do today’s jobs with

yesterday’s tools.
