An Open Source Business Community

This is how we workin Apache Software Foundation

Open Source Business Community in Apache

In Apache Software Foundation, we build open source communities like this:

There are several key issuesto the success of this ecosystem.

Key Issues to an Open Source Business Community

MeritocracyEveryone can join in as long as she/he contributes.

Non-AffiliationSoftware projects are not affiliated with any of the sponsors.

TransparencyEverything goes public. No hidden affiliation.

TRUSTSoftware projects are neutraland they welcome everybody to join

But, why?

Why should we bring business toopen source software projects?Isnt it enough to keep OSS projectsnon-commercial?

Because otherwise it just wont work.

Keeping OSS projects non-commercialmeanswe have to depend on volunteer developerswho work in their spare time

Holidays

The time after work when they are supposed to stay with their family, children, husbands and wives when you, as an end-user, are staying at home watching TV

This system wont work, especially with medium-to-large projects

For the OSS projects to be healthy, project development must take daytime, and this time must be paidby someone, some company

Thats why we need business sponsors. Not only sponsoring the money, but most importantly, sponsoring the development.

But, again, why?

Why do we sponsorwhen software is free to use and take?

Morality is the first reason, but not the only, nor the last.
