Excavation Work – Code of Practice

Released by Safe Work Australia in July 2012.

Representative's from Commonwealth, State, Territory Governments along with

Australian Council of Trade Unions, Australian Chamber of Commerce and

Australian Industry Groups.

Shoring - Types

Shielding Will not prevent the walls of an excavation from failing but provides a

safety zone for workers in the event a trench should collapse.

Page 11: Nigel Robbins & Rex Turner - Coates Hire - Safety, engineering and innovation in equipment solutions

Shoring - Types

Shoring

Supports the walls of trench to prevent the walls from failing. Can

be either by applied pressure or ‘snug’ fit.

Page 12: Nigel Robbins & Rex Turner - Coates Hire - Safety, engineering and innovation in equipment solutions

Shoring - Types

In addition to mechanical shoring or shielding, you have two other

alternatives for providing a safe environment for workers in the trench:-

Benching or Battering

Page 13: Nigel Robbins & Rex Turner - Coates Hire - Safety, engineering and innovation in equipment solutions

AS Compliance

• AS4744.1 specifically covers steel shoring.

• Standard developed to ensure worker

safety and supply of consistent quality

product to the industry.

• Standard is explicit as to shoring box

capacity rating – ‘working’ uniform

pressure envelope.

• Construction industry suppliers not all

complying to the standard. Claims around

vague pressure references, pressures at

base of panel or triangular pressure

envelopes and even Type A, B or C soils –

not consistent to standard.

Page 14: Nigel Robbins & Rex Turner - Coates Hire - Safety, engineering and innovation in equipment solutions

AS Compliance

• Aluminium is not presently covered by

Australian Standards so design is governed by

manufacturers or suppliers own

interpretations.

• Basic rule of thumb in good ground conditions

without any ground water present is

approximately 7 kPa (0.7 tonnes per square

metre) per metre depth.

• Some industry product capacity ratings seem

overly generous.

• Engineering of strut assemblies is especially

paramount in a high clearance configurations.

• TAKE AWAY is the capacity of the shield or

shoring box is ‘black & white’ there should be

no grey. Ask the question!

Page 15: Nigel Robbins & Rex Turner - Coates Hire - Safety, engineering and innovation in equipment solutions

AS Compliance Equipment Ratings

Sometimes it’s not so simple!

If in

doubt,

ask the

technical

team!

Page 16: Nigel Robbins & Rex Turner - Coates Hire - Safety, engineering and innovation in equipment solutions

Benefits of Shoring

• Safety for the workers

• Reducing spoil

• Less filling and compacting

• Right systems increase

efficiencies

• Protection of adjacent assets

Water Treatment – Sediment Tanks

• General purpose settlement tank suitable

for use in most site pumping applications.

• A series of internal baffles and weirs that

can assist in the removal of suspended

solids from untreated water.

• Incorporated is a skimming baffle that will

retain any surface oils or floating

hydrocarbons and prevent them from being

discharged.

• ‘Floc’ Blocks’ can be used at the water inlet

to create quick settling ‘floc’ particles.

• Able to handle flow rates up to 60l/s

• Holding capacity of 13200 litres

• External dimensions of the tank are 6.0

metres long by 2m wide by 2m high. Dry

weight of the unit is 2.9 tonnes.

Page 57: Nigel Robbins & Rex Turner - Coates Hire - Safety, engineering and innovation in equipment solutions

Water Treatment – Siltstopper Tanks

• Fast and simple to setup.

• Have a unique design which aids rapid particle

settlement & water clarification.

• Small footprint, compact easy to manage

alternative, compared to tanks & lagoons.

• Unique design aids rapid particle settlement &

water clarification.

• Units outperform conventional settlement

processes.
