Water-Mist systems utilize clean water as fire-fighting agent.

Water is the oldest, the most widely used, and the most widely available fire

fighting agent in the world:

Non-toxic

Environmentally friendly

Has superior fire fighting capabilities in a wide range of applications

What is Water-Mist ?

What about HI-FOG® water mist and electronics?

“None of the tests conducted indicated any significant increase in

hazard to the personnel in the vicinity of the charged plate due to

the presence of the water mist.” (Hughes Associates, 2004)

Fire protection of Rolling Stock • General description of the solution:

• The supression system is to control and suppress fires in different areas of the train: • Passanger areas (seating areas, toilets, vestibules, sleeping cars, restaurant cars) • Technical areas (engine and electric enclosures)

• The system in passenger areas might be, at train level, centralized or distributed:

• On fix configuration trains, it is preferred a centralized solution, with 1 or 2 water mist units connected to the entire pipe network and nozzles.

• On variable configuration trains, that adds or removes single coahes on a daily base, the system is normally distributed, with small but indipendent systems installed on every coach.

• The system in the technical areas is normally distributed, using water mist or other technologies to protect the single area

• NO ONE-FIT-ALL but TAILOR-MADE SOLUTION

different solutions:

- Spray head system

- Pop out sprinkler

- Passenger areas, including

toilette and vestibules

Open nozzles deluge system

• System concept: • The detection system gives alarm and activate the unit and the section

valve/s of the alarmed zone/s

• The mist will discharge through the open nozzles of the specific zone

• Typical hardware composition: • MARIOFF MAU or HAU (accumulator pressure units), typically composed of a

50 l pressure cylinder + (2 or 3) 50 l water cylinders

• Main dry pipe along a single car or entire train, diameter 16-20 mm

• Zone system each half of a car + a nozzle(s) overlapping

• Each zone controlled by a machinery section valve

Zoned deluge system

• Advantages of overlapping zoned deluge solution:

• quick system operation

• quick cooling

• anti vandalism (not visible)

Page 20: Mr. teemu sipila protecting rolling stock - water mist fire protection

HI-FOG® - Protecting Rolling Stock 20

Pop out sprinkler system

• System concept: • The System will be pre-activated by detection system

• All the sprinkler bulb gages will pop out automatically by the pressure

• NO WATER DISCHARGE AT THIS POINT

• As the heat breaks the single bulb, the sprinkler starts discharge locally

• Typical hardware composition: • MARIOFF MAU or HAU (accumulator pressure units), typically composed of a 50 l

pressure cilynder + (2 or 3) 50 l water cylinders

• Main dry pipe along a single car or entire train, diameter 16-20 mm

• HI-FOG® pop-out sprinkler heads

Pop out sprinkler system

• Advantages of pop out sprinkler solution:

• avoids accidental discharges • local intervention, point by point • less invasive, more visibility • allows better evacuation of the car • intelligent use of water (smaller quantitites and longer

duration) • smaller piping, smaller pressure units • anti vandalism (not visible) • better suppression performance (higher pressure) • better fitting to separate enclosures ( toilettes,..)

HI-FOG® for Rolling Stock: a variety of solutions

Some basic numbers

The system is tailored according to the single project and

technology used, but the most common solutions pass through the

following numbers:

• Discharge duration: between 3 and 15 minutes

• Quantity of water involved:between 50 and 250 liters of water

• Weight: between 300 and 1000 kilogram

• Accumulator unit dimensions: around 2 x 1.6 x 0.6 meters
