Case Study: Integration on Existing Vehicles

Background of EVAG-Project:

A lot of stations, which are 30 to 40 years old and the

measures they have to realise are related to extreme

efforts and costs

The FOGTEC idea: reduce the given scenario by

active measurements on board, in this case with a

fire detection and fire suppression system.

The operator, the fire safety consultant and the

approval body accepted this solution, but they gave

an approval plan to FOGTEC.

Step 1: smoke tests on board of the different running trains to

develop a fire detection concept on the base of the ARGE –

directive

Step 2: full scale fire test to demonstrate the effectiveness of the

fire suppression system

Step 3: Realisation of a prototype system in a running train to

demonstrate the feasibility and to get a clear view of the costs

Step 4: safety approval for the complete system and the software

Results for concepts – a new idea of design in mobility

Change of fire scenario:

For vehicles:

• Possibilities for new design of vehicles (different materials, no

fire barriers (open gangway philosophie), …)

• Possible positive effects in weight management

For station:

• Lower fire load = less smoke and heat development

• Smaller smoke extraction systems

• Less investment in fire protection measures on side of the

infrastrucutre
