Why Green Ports matter?Green Ports initiatives contribute to improve air quality in cities and ports, reduce air pollutants and noise, and reduce CO2

• Non-methane volatile organic compound

• PM2.5

• Sulphur dioxide

• Nitrogen oxydes

• PM10

• Ammonia

Effects of air pollution include breathing and respiratory systems, damage to lung tissue, cancer, premature death, incidence of acute respiratory illness in children, cardiovascular disease and chronic lung disease.

What is Green Ports?

Green Ports is a set of measures to improve Port’s and maritime transport impact on environment.

• Replacement of traditional engines with GNL powered engines.

• Use of scrubbers in vessels.

• Onshore Power Supply.

Today, several agreements for a cleaner maritime transport have been adopted.According to an EU directive, starting in 2015, vessels sailing in the SECA zone in North Europe must release less than 0.1% of Sulphur

• Current ECA zones • Potential ECA zones

ECA zones worldwide

• ECA: The US limits emissions of SO2, NOx y CO2

• SECA: Europe limits only SO2 emissions

Percentage of shipping emissions over global emissions : 15% of nitrogen oxide, N0x 6% of sulphur oxides, S02 2% carbon dioxide, CO2

• The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for the safety of navigation and prevention of marine pollution by vessels.

• The MARPOL Convention (Annex VI) lays down rules on air pollution caused by ships.

• MARPOL applies ECA zones stricter rules on emission limits.

• EU seeks to coordinate the position of IMO member countries to adopt measures to reduce ship emissions.

• According to European Directive from 2015, sulphur emission limit to 0.1% in navigation and port.

Installing scrubbers in a ship requires a smaller investment compared to retrofitting of a ship to accommodate the LNGCurrently the LNG has the added difficulty of the lack of grid (LNG bunkering)

LNG vs Scrubbers

Item LNG Scrubbers

• LNG investment far beyond Scrubber Scrubber: 5 Million EUR * LNG: 5-30 EUR *

• Longest stay at shipyard for LNG front Scrubber 1-2 months of LNG retrofitting scrubbers VS10 days

• Current widespread lack of infrastructure supply with liquefied natural gas pumping Ports

• LNG reduces energy costs of operation and maintenance.• Natural gas combustion is cleaner: Motor life is increased

10 to 15%.• Availability of space is required to install on board LNG

storage tanks to -165 ° C and 0-10 bar.• Loss of cargo space,• LNG emits less CO2 (30%), NOx (90%) and particles

Note(*): figures are estimates, they may vary upon tpower, type, features, space available for machines, and others.

The Onshore Power Supply (OPS) replace the auxiliary engines on board for generating the energy required for activities during vessel stays in portsOPS connects berthed vessels to a power supply through a cable (i.e. connected to the local electricity grid)

Governments, Port Authorities, Terminal Operators and Shipping Lines in the Mediterranean are the main maritime stakeholders concerned with Green Ports

Reasons to implement Green Ports initiatives Actions that will ease Green Ports projects

• Social and environment impact.

• Savings.

• CO2 carbon footprint improvement.

• Compliance.

• Take advantage of support from Public entities.

• Use of PPP for financing.

• Seek support of Public financing mechanisms (Horizon 2020, CEF, etc.)

• Implement incentives and/or taxation schema to support Green Ports.

• Focus first on higher-impact projects (e.g. Ro-Ro terminals, cruises, etc.).

• Do a proper analysis that will define cost and benefit sharing among stakeholders in a fair manner.
