The $5bn MMT opportunity

• The World Bank estimates that formal remittances totalled $375bn in 2008, of which $283bn went to developing countries. Reducing remittance charges by 2-5% could increase the flow of formal remittances by 50-70%, encouraging the delivery of lower value remittances

• The domestic remittance opportunity is even bigger: according to a 2007 survey by FinAccess, in the last 12 months 33.4% of Kenyans had sent or received a domestic money transfer compared to just 3.5% who had sent or received an international remittance

• It costs around $400 to equip a mobile money agent. It costs around $250,000 to set up a branch, $10,000 to set up an ATM – mobile money will be the key to bringing financial services to rural areas

• Safaricom’s M-PESA recently signed up their 5 millionth customer… in under 2 years of operation

• 70% of mobile payment initiatives announced in the last 6 months have been in MMT, according to Juniper Research

• Juniper also forecast that revenues derived from domestic and international MMT services will exceed $5bn globally by 2013
