Accidents will happen in the workplace. About one third of all workplace accidents are the
result of poor manual handling. Poor technique is a major contributing factor. Lack of training which is overlooked Lack of engineering design controls ie: trucks,
sack carts, automated processes, container shapes and sizes.

This presentation will discuss some basics of manual handling however the focus is to discuss the real cost behind back injury due to poor manual handling which extends beyond the employer being short staffed and the worker having a bad back.

Manual Handling – what is it!
What is manual handling?Any manual handling operation can be described as:“ The transporting or supporting of a load, including the lifting, lowering, putting down, pushing, carrying or moving, by hand or by bodily force.”
Picking up and moving a power tool, a piece of wood or a ream of paper all involve manual handling. All Manual handling is governed by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. Operatives have a duty to follow through and use correctly what has been provided and taught (training) to reduce their risk of injury. Manual handling tasks should be provided with a risk assessment which employers have a duty to ensure employees understand.

Manual Handling – basic principles
When moving an object from one area to another there are four principles to remember. Known as TILE
TASK – What is the risk of injury? What can be improved?
INDIVIDUAL – Does the person doing the task have a back problem, have they had training?
LOAD – heavy, light, size, shape, even or unevenly balanced, solid or liquid, fragile, sharp edges, hot or cold, difficult to move etc.
ENVIRONMENT - hot, cold, inside, outside, windy, slippy , steps to climb, uneven surfaces, blind stops, visibility, traffic movement including people. etc

Employer: Lost production Staff shortage Workforce under pressure Increased risk of accidents to meet targets Cost of replacement staff ie: agency, overtime etc Possible court cost if claim for damages and legal fees, evidence
gathering etc Damage to stock whilst moving item that caused injury Company repetition and media interest.

On average for every £1 spent on an accident there is a further £36 worth of hidden costs associated.
Can we really ignore basic manual handling techniques?
Could we think of ways the work environment could be improved?
Could we give consideration to delivery, storage and end use of materials?

Employee: Injury to back Lost of income Poor social life – unable to visiting friends, days out with family etc Lack of quality time with family – unable to playing with kids etc Poor sex life Possible lost of employment due to injury and mobility Lack of identity – financial support to family Social isolation – depression – lack of sleep Pressure on family – dependant due to lack of mobility Lack of independence, self worth & guilt
