Consequences of band fragmentation
for LTE devices
• Vodafone experiences and plans for LTE devices
• Providing superior LTE devices while
accommodating the battery and multi-band
requirements of LTE networks
• FDD vs. TD-LTE – accommodating both variants in
mobile devices
• Vodafone band requirements for devices

Experience from initial device launches
Positive Surprises : • Impressive user experience • High data rates • Low latency • Stable and reliable • Surprisingly few interworking issues
Learnings: • Complete new system, significant impact
on e2e chain (SIM, device, radio, transport, core, IT systems, process)
• Inter system mobility complex, requires integrated network with upgrade of all legacy networks
• Significant testing effort, esp. Mobility • CS-FB works, call setup time acceptable,
but limitations
Open Issues: • Device Cost • Battery Life • Fragmented voice solutions • Spectrum Fragmentation

Why are there so many LTE frequency bands ?
• Value of spectrum
• Regulation, different bands in different regions
• Legacy – e.g. military use, analogue TV
C1 – Public | 24 May 2012 11
What will customers expect from LTE devices ?
Let‘s take an example of a 3G product
today, with world-wide compatibility:
iPhone 4s supports:
• 4x HSPA
• 2x CDMA
• 4x EDGE
To achieve similar global compatibility and roaming,
6-8 LTE bands required in addition

Spectrum
Vodafone foresees a convergent FDD/TDD scenario in an
increasing number of our markets
• We have acquired 2600 MHz TDD spectrum in Germany, Spain and
Portugal
• LTE service using FDD in Germany since December 2010, Portugal since
March 2012

Chipsets
• All major chipsets manufacturers support both FDD and TDD in hardware today
• Full commercial availability of TDD chipsets typically lagging FDD by ~1year
Devices
• Commercial TDD devices available
• Some devices declare FDD & TDD capability
Features
• Handover between FDD and TDD not yet available
• Co-existence FDD/TDD on same device yet to be proven commercially
• FDD/TDD Carrier aggregation not currently on roadmaps
% Band support existing LTE terminals
Source: GSA website, January 2012
•Today converged FDD/TDD terminal support is limited.
•We need to continue to drive converged FDD/TDD terminal availability
How is the ecosystem evolving to support FDD/TDD convergence in the devices?

Vodafone LTE frequency band requirements
24 May 2012 *) Bands, which might or will be required, but timeframe unclear Note: All Timelines are indicative, subject of change
2010 Band 20 (800 MHz): Deployed in Germany
2011 Band 7 (2600 MHz): Deployment in Portugal and Germany
Italy, Spain, SFR in France acquire LTE spectrum
2012 Band 3 (1800 MHz) : Spectrum available in many markets,
re-farming from 2G in 2012
2013 Band 13 (700 MHz): Roaming to US, Verizon Wireless
2014 Band xx (700 MHz): FDD for Asia-Pacific region
2015 Band 38, (2600 MHz): TDD for Europe including FDD–TDD convergence:
FDD and TDD on the same device, including handover and co-existence
Uncertain *)

Vendors, which enable LTE Multiband & Multimode devices will be most successful
Conclusion
• LTE will require Multiband devices, to facilitate economies of scale
and global roaming
• HSPA+ and EDGE support on devices required for coverage
• Solutions need to be cost effective and small
• No Compromise on RF performance
• Current focus is FDD, but FDD+TDD support will be required,
including co-existence and interworking
