Lighting

By Melissa Turner

Issues for my film• Is there electricity in the barn?• After contacting the owner theyinvestigated into whether there is

electricity there isn’t, therefore the flood lights need to be powered by a car battery or generator.

• What is the battery life of the torches?• The torches are super powered, they will not run out of battery during the

filming process.

• How are we going to move around the lighting?• The lighting will vary in the barn due to many factors, such as whether the

actors are stood underneath the windows, the time the filming takes and the sun setting. The weight of the car battery and how easily it can be moved.

• Is there any other light sources in the barn?• There are two tiny windows at the top of the barn which let in a degree of

light, this however depends on the weather being sunny and before dusk to gain the maximum potential light. The door of the barn could also be opened if not in the shot to maximize light.

Importance of lighting

• It allows editing to be manipulated in high quality.

• It shows facial expressions and makeup.

• It can set a mood – with horror it needs to be darkened in order to give a eerie feeling.

• It can look light enough on the camera but its much darker when on the computer.

• After my last filming was awful due to the poor lighting I am devising a plan of the barn and where the lighting will be positioned throughout the different shots.

As part of my second planning for my filming I am making a plan of the room for each scene, the yellow squares are where the lightening will need to be for each scene. The red squares are where I will position lights. Scene 1:

• This is a good link for tips for lighting.

• Overall this lighting research will help me produce a more professional high quality film.

• Top Tips:- What appears on the camera is always lighter than the computer

- Use more lighting than needed as it can be darkened down to create a more horror mood.
