Lessons Learnt Part 5

April 2016Panel Build and Installation Issues

Introduction• The installation and execution of projects have

thought us numerous lessons.• The more projects we execute, the more we

can fine tune and refine to give a better more efficient execution.

• Here is a list of them , I ask you all to go through them, understand them and find a method of remembering them when we do something similar again.

Termination of armour cable on steel barsarmouring of cable pierced through the core insulation and

shorted to earthWhen terminating the armoured cables on steel bars

(without glands). One needs to take care that the armouring does not damage the insulation.

Stripping outer insulation to fit cablesNever strip cables from their outer insulation, if the cables

have not enough room to pass another route or solution needs to be found.

Bottom entry foam platesThe foam plates at the bottom of the panel kept falling off

during cable entry- At panel build stage these plates need to be bolted/riveted in place.

BMS Field devices installed by othersValve actuators installed in place but the

mechanical interlock to the valve was not connected

Installers need to be informed of such connection.

Missing internal panel cable labelling At panel build stage cable markers were not

finished due to the amount of time required to finish off

Time factor needs to be increased for cable labelling especially in large panels.

Internal panel modifications At panel building stage modifications from

original design were not updated on the panel drawings

All modifications must be updated on the panel drawings before these are sent to site.
