Tracing a path of robust growth under G PLAN 2013With the globalization of economic activities, a digitally networked society moving into high gear, and increas-ingly serious questions surrounding resources and energy, the variety and extreme nature of change in the world we live in is forcing alterations in long-held values.

At this juncture, we at Konica Minolta aim to create new growth opportunities by accurately identifying the changing needs of society and responding to them with the technologies we have developed over the years. Clearly reflecting our commitment to and orientation toward growing in that way is “G PLAN 2013,” the medium-term business plan we began to implement in fiscal 2011.

Setting forth three key directions – 1) Achieving strong growth, expanding business scale 2) Changing into a “Global Company,” and 3) Increasing the recogni-tion of the Konica Minolta brand – “G PLAN 2013” calls for the achievement of at least ¥1 trillion in sales and an operating income ratio of 8% or higher by fiscal 2013. With “growth” as the keyword, we are focusing on realiz-ing robust growth and enhancing profitability as our highest priorities in achieving the targets mentioned above. Toward that end, we have identified, and are channeling management resources to, key growth drivers for individual businesses to promote efficient growth. At the same time, we are working to develop our Environment and Energy and other new businesses to serve society’s future needs.

Following these directions and strategies, we pursued various initiatives in each of our businesses in fiscal 2011, the first year of “G PLAN 2013,” and results are gradually being realized. In our Production Print business, for example, we are now contending for leadership of this business genre after introducing new products and enhancing our sales system. Furthermore, in our Business Solutions business, enhanced develop-ment of our OPS1 comprehensive office equipment oper-ating and management services paid off with the addition of numerous major customers consisting mainly of global companies.

Over the three years ending with fiscal 2013, we aim to follow a path of strong growth by enhancing our profit-ability and expanding our earnings through solid and aggressive initiatives implemented under the direction and strategies we have established.1 OPS (Optimized Print Services): Services in which all operation and

management of office equipment used by a customer company’s worldwide offices is performed on an outsourced basis with the aim of comprehensively optimizing the customer’s printing environments through network-based centralized management.

Major organizational overhaul for Group-wide optimizationAchieving our “G PLAN 2013” objectives requires that we improve our profitability and further accelerate the speed of our growth. In April 2012, therefore, we embarked on a major reorganization of our Business Companies. Its purpose was to simultaneously acceler-ate both the growth of businesses that are growth drivers

and the speed of profitability improvement at Business Companies requiring it. This reorganization was the largest reform effort we have undertaken since our management integration in 2003 and demonstrates our commitment to growth.

In more concrete terms, we have reorganized the businesses of individual Business Companies to allow the optimization of production facilities and human and other resources on a Group-wide basis, with attention focused on the performance materials and optical technologies that have been at our core since our estab-lishment. Culminating the reorganization, we established Konica Minolta Advanced Layers, Inc. around perfor-mance material technologies, and Konica Minolta Optics, Inc. around optical technologies.

Both companies have been organized around a single type of technology to improve the efficiency of technology development and sales activities, accelerate the pursuit of new businesses, and ultimately create new value.

Deepening communications with customers throughout the worldWe believe that the key to our growth is to focus on providing products and services that are truly valuable to customers and society. It is critical, therefore, that we disseminate throughout the world our commitment to creating value that customers seek, and deepen our

communications with customers in various fields and geographic locations across the globe.

“Giving Shape to Ideas,” the communication message we created in the fall of 2011, is an expression of our commitment to using our own technologies and innovations to give shape to ideas that help to solve prob-lems faced by customers and society – problems that we see as our own.

“Innovation” here derives from the problem-solving capabilities, and outstanding technical expertise and creativity, embodied in the Konica Minolta Group. Through the innovation we offer, we aim to help custom-ers realize their ideas and dreams, bring excitement to business and daily life, and give rise to new value.

Konica Minolta, by helping people across the globe achieve their desires, will achieve robust growth as a company both supported and relied upon throughout the world.

As cloud computing takes off──

Amid the increasing globalization of business──

For environmentally friendly operations──

For global corporations, reducing the business impacts and costs of operating MFPs, printers, and other ofce equipment at business sites across the globe, without sacricing productivity or efciency, is a critical management issue.

To address this need, Konica Minolta provides Optimized Print Services (OPS), a globally uniform service set in which we deliver printing environ-ment optimization solutions that result in the best technology deployments for the conditions at hand and increase operating efciency. We identify issues and streamline on an ofce-by-ofce basis, while employing network resources to centrally manage, and monitoring operating data for, the customer’s worldwide ofce equipment.

Having already won major contracts to provide, operate, and manage ofce equipment for global corporations in a wide variety of industries, our OPS offerings have become a subject of great interest in locations throughout the world.

Optimized Print Services for global corporate printing environments

Drawing on its wealth of expertise in environmentally conscious design, Konica Minolta offers MFPs that are both energy and resource efcient, and deliver greater convenience and productivity.

To save energy, for example, our MFPs are not only designed to consume less electricity they also promote energy efciency with each usage via an ECO Info (ECO Indicator) display on the control panel. This display provides graphic feedback on the environmental efciency of electricity, toner, paper, and other resource consumption. To use fewer resources in making our MFPs, we have drawn upon our advanced materials technology to develop a material made from a combination of recycled PC (polycarbonate) and recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate). This recycled PC/PET offers outstanding durability and we are furthering its use as an exterior material for MFPs.

Moving into the future, we will continue to leverage our environmental technologies to respond to environmental needs as we strengthen our businesses.

Digital color-proofing systems

We contribute to greater efciency and reliability in printing settings by providing completely digital workows made possible by digital color-proong systems. These systems feature true reproduction that offers even the texture that has so far been exclusive to analog printing. Furthermore, by minimizing the use of materials needed to turn out proofs, our digital color-proong systems also help to lower environmental impacts.

Until now, digital printing has been known for its strengths in meeting small-lot, rapid-turnaround, and variable printing1 needs but relative weakness in terms of image stability, and large-lot productivity and reliability, compared to offset and other forms of analog printing. Konica Minolta has overcome these issues by melding its own material and design technologies with image processing technology. Through the development of advanced technologies, we have widened the possibilities for digital printing.

From analog, to digital. . .The evolution of technology has brought major innovations to printing environments and there is now a clear and growing demand for digital printing throughout the world. In pursuing digital printing that offers greater speed, beauty, and consistency, we at Konica Minolta are also striving to achieve greater levels of customer satisfaction by applying resources in the form of our own digital printing technology, broad product line, and global support system.

Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) Lighting offers benets like high luminous efcacy, surface light source, and avoidance of heavy metals, and, therefore, is being viewed as a promising next-generation lighting technology. Konica Minolta has developed its own blue phosphorescent materi-als and commercialized the world’s rst OLED panel using only phosphorescent materials. These OLED panels entail little environmental burden, provide light that is easy on the eyes, and we will bring a wider variety of applications going forward.

The ongoing miniaturization of semiconductor devices requires the use of photo fabrication technology that optically reproduces circuit patterns. Drawing on photosensitive materials technologies developed over many years, Konica Minolta offers high-precision photo plates that enable high-quality, exceptionally faithful reproductions as optimal mask materials for photo-fabrication.

Konica Minolta also offers window lm for automo-bile glass, which must meet the highest safety standards. These lms feature high infrared reectance to prevent car interiors from heating up, and excellent electromagnetic wave transparency to avoid interference with ETC (automatic toll collection) and other vehicle-mounted communica-tions devices.

Konica Minolta has a line of functional window lms that offer heat insulation, a combination of heat insulation and dirt-resistance, dirt-resistance, and shatter resistance. When applied to windows, these lms contribute to energy efciency by providing outstanding heat insulation and reducing air-conditioning and heating usage.

Liquid crystal displays used in televisions, personal computers, smartphones, and a wide variety of other applications. Konica Minolta provides TAC lm for protecting LCD polarizers, VA-TAC lm that increases the viewing angle for LCD screens, and other high-value-added products.

Next-generation displays for products like smartphones, tablet PCs, and ultrabooks require exible devices incorporating extremely thin and durable plastic panels. High-barrier lm combining outstanding protection characteristics and exibility contribute to higher quality in exible devices.

Concentrated solar power generation uses large numbers of mirrors to reect and concentrate sunlight as a heat source for generating electric power. Because these power stations are located in deserts and other places with abundant sunlight, the lm mirrors, which are key to the system, must be able to maintain their reectance in harsh environments. Konica Minolta, leveraging the advanced materials technologies it has cultivated over the years, has developed lm mirrors with high reectance and outstanding durability. Moving ahead, we will accelerate our commercialization efforts to contribute to the proliferation and development of solar thermal electric power generation systems.

Digital X-ray diagnosticimaging systems (CR, DR)

Mainly with its digital X-ray diagnostic imaging systems, as well as mammography, ultrasound, and other cutting-edge diagnostic systems, Konica Minolta has led the digitalization of diagnostic imaging. By efciently providing high-resolution, high-precision diagnostic images, we have helped to improve the accuracy and speed of diagnoses, thereby easing burdens on patients.

Expectations for medical IT services employing networks are building along with advances in the application of digital technology in medical settings. Among the earliest to respond to these developing needs, Konica Minolta offers “informity”—comprehensive services supporting the adoption of medical network technology. Examples of “informity” services include remote support for diagnostic equipment, support for the sharing of information among hospitals, and the distribution of news on developments in medical regulation. Through innovations like “informity” we are helping to make the operational aspects of medicine smarter and more efcient.

The adoption of digital technology in medical imaging not only improves the efciency with which the data is stored and managed, it also brings various forms of innovation to medical diagnostic settings. For example, greater diagnostic accuracy has been obtained through the ability to enlarge or reduce images, and through access to gradation processing. Medical imaging data systems enable the retention and processing of diagnostic images. Konica Minolta provides systems capable of comprehensively managing X-ray image, CT scan, endoscopic, and other types of image data, including that generated by other companies’ products. Our systems make it possible to efcient- ly and effectively apply medical image data.

Konica Minolta is actively working with academic and government research institutes in the pursuit of R&D. For example, in recent years, we have been collaborating with partners, including the University of Tokyo and the University of Hyogo, to develop an innovative X-ray imaging device that employs X-ray refraction. This device uses the Talbot-Lau interferometer to produce X-ray images with nearly 1,000 times the sensitivity of conven-tional X-ray technology. Images with that degree of sensitivity make it possible to identify very early-stage breast cancer, cartilage abnormalities due to rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions that so far have evaded simple detection.

High-precision, more flexible cutting-edge “AeroDR” digital X-ray system

X-ray Exposure

Digital Radiography (DR) exposes patients to less radiation than does lm imaging and makes it possible to display high-precision images immediately after they are taken. Until recently, however, DR posed signicant usability issues in terms of the weight of the equipment and the need for power and data transmission cables.

Konica Minolta’s “AeroDR” responds to these issues through painstaking engineering that resulted in a signicantly lighter system that incorporates wireless technology to elim- inate data cables. “AeroDR” resolves usability issues that previously plagued DR and will help to promote the adoption of DR technology.

“Collaboration Box Service” helping hospitals to share medical information

Konica Minolta, as part of its “informity” network service for medical institutions, offers the “Collaboration Box Service,” which allows multiple medical institutions to share imaging data, biopsy data, report content, and other types of diagnostic information.

This system makes it possible for physicians in community clinics to consult with specialists at major hospitals, and allows specialists in different elds to share opinions while viewing the same image. To cite one example of an actual implementation, a group of nine medical institutions, includ-ing a regional core hospital, in Aomori, Japan, has adopted this system and used it to engage specialists in timely, remote consultations on how to handle neurological problems and other emergency situations.

Amid the accelerating application of IT in medical applica-tions, there are growing desires among neighborhood clinics to adopt digital X-ray imaging. In response, Konica Minolta developed the compact, lightweight “REGIUS ΣⅡ” desktop CR for use in clinics.

“REGIUS ΣⅡ” emits no sound while in standby mode and poses no obstacle to medical examinations even when located in the same room. Furthermore, with power con- sumption of only 100VA, less than 10% that of X-ray lm processors, “REGIUS ΣⅡ” is an environmentally conscious product that saves electricity and ghts global warming.

In broadening applications of LED lighting, which is gaining popular-ity for its energy efficiency, increasing the amount of light emitted, extending usable life, and control-ling heat are critical consider-ations. Konica Minolta is both driving the technical innovation for addressing these issues and furthering commercialization of LED lighting products. In March 2012, for instance, we announced the “Symfos LED-TASKLIGHT”, a desk lamp offering both surface light emission that is easy on the eyes and high directionality.

The various colors that can be seen on the surface of a soap bubble illustrate the principle of reflectometric interference, which says that changes in the thickness of an optical film can be measured as changes in wavelengths of reflected light. Using this principle, Konica Minolta has developed the “MI-Affinity” system for the real-time measurement of intermolecular adsorption and dissocia-tion, and expansion and contraction of film mate-rial, at the nanometric level. MI-Affinity will lend powerful support to various R&D efforts in the field of nanotechnology.

As Group companies implement our Medium-Term Environmental Plan 2015, Konica Minolta Business Expert provides them with advice and support tailored to their individual business characteristics. Energy management experts, for instance, provide energy-efficiency support. And chemical substance specialists execute and manage advanced evaluation of chemical risks to eliminate hazardous substances from production processes and products. They also develop and promote the use of SIGMA Green Procurement Systems, which improve chemical management by evaluating the chemical content of parts and components before procurement. In these and other ways, as well, Konica Minolta Business Expert helps to advance the Group’s environ-mental initiatives.

Over many years, Konica Minolta Business Expert has accumulated a wealth of technologies and know-how in the design and construc-tion of plant and research facilities, and in process improvement for production facilities. By drawing on this expertise to provide Group companies in Japan with optimal R&D and manufacturing facilities, or help improve the efficiency of processes, Konica Minolta Business Expert contributes greatly to improvements in quality and value. In recent years, Konica Minolta Business Expert has also been developing environmental technolo-gies, thereby, contributing not only to the benefit of Group companies but also external customers and society as a whole.
