EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

• Did you know that failure to follow these Standards could result in penalties of up to $500,000?

▫ Ontario businesses must comply with the Ontario Employment Standards Act, 2000 and its Amendments.

▫ What is the next statutory holiday in Ontario?

▫ Will your business be open or closed?

▫ What will you pay your employees if you are closed?

▫ What will you pay your employees if you are open and the employee must work?

▫ What will you pay the employee whose regularly scheduled day off falls on the statutory holiday?

▫ What do you have to pay for public holidays?

Health and SafetyDo you have employees in Ontario ?

Are they members of a union ?How do you negotiate with the union ?

It is a good idea to have employee contracts even if you only have one or two employees.

When questions come up both you and the employee have something that you can look at and say 'Yes' - this is what we agreed upon.

Everyone is more comfortable when they don't have unexpected surprises.

Even if the employee contract only has the minimums according to the Ontario Employment Standards - it is always helpful to 'have it in writing'.

Employee Benefit Plans

• Is it the right time to include a benefits plan for your employees ?

• Which one will work for you ?

• If you are a member of a Chamber of Commerce or another association, you may have an opportunity to enrol in a Benefit Plan through them so that you gain a good rate with a larger group.

Performance Metrics

• The value of annual employee evaluations can be measured

in time, money, and productivity.

• The annual performance evaluation with your employee is

an excellent time to review the past year, set goals for the

next months and write out strategies for how to accomplish

those goals.

• You may be amazed at how much your employees know

about your business !

• Ask them for their input and they can give you ideas that

you never dreamed of.

• They are your front line when it comes to dealing with your

customers. What do they know about your customers that

YOU don't ?

Training and Development

• There is government mandated training for employees

through the Ontario Health and Safety Act for the

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada's national hazard communication

standard. The key elements of the system are cautionary labelling of containers of WHMIS "controlled products", the provision of material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and worker education and

training programs.
