John E. Jenkins, Inc. – CAT 621 Cylinder and Head Replacement

March 2010

Summary:During normal operations, the engine on the CAT 621 began smoking and skipping which resulted in a loss of power. After a short inspection, we determined that the main fault was related to the valve stem which had broken off and dropped down in the head. From that point, we decided to move the machine to our maintenance facility for further review.

Once we removed the head, we determined that the damage was isolated to one cylinder. The damaged piston, pictured to the right, had one of the valves embedded in the top portion and was severely melted.
