• Area:Japan's area is comparable to that of Germany or California. Japan's northernmost islands are located on a similar geographical latitude as Milan or Portland, while her southernmost islands are on a similar latitude as the Bahamas. More than 50% of the country is mountainous and covered by forests. Japan is politically structured into 8 regions and 47 prefectures.

• Population:The population of Japan is about 125,000,000, including approximately two million foreign residents. More than half of the non Japanese population is of Korean descent.

• PrefecturesIn the Japanese system, the word prefecture is used for translating references to an administrative district, ken (県), which is about the size of a county in the United States.

Japan is divided into 47 prefectures and each prefecture is further divided into municipalities. These prefectures and municipalities have no overlapping districts or uncovered areas. In short, all the residents in Japan are sure to belong to one prefecture and one municipality.

Japanese Television Overview• Regular TV broadcasting began after World War II in 1951.

• Japanese residents must pay an annual license fee used to fund NHK, the Japanese public service broadcaster.

• There are approximately 50 million TV HH in Japan, of which over 17 million are HDTV.

• There are 6 national television networks and dozens of regional affiliates and local TV stations.

• National Japanese networks do not air religious programming, due to their ethics code.

• There are 14 commercial, independent stations which are not affiliated with the major Japanese networks.

– The independent stations regularly air 20-24 hours per day and are reception fee-free.

– The coverage area for independent stations are located in the most urbanized regions of Japan and reach a high percentage of the population.

– Independent stations’ programming focus on mainstream, general entertainment and are receptive to air religious shows and other paid programming.
