Why Transition to Mobile BI?
The Value of Mobile Business Intelligence
Faster, better decisionsAbility to hasten the decision-making process, by extending critical information out to decision-makers faster
Simplified, intuitive analyticsBy the nature of mobile devices, we have to make the information more intuitive and succinct
Increased productivityThe most potent advantage that
organizations can gain from mobile BI is "in-the-moment" transformation of
their business processes. 1
Increased collaboration
Mobile devices are shown to foster collaboration by putting the ability to
connect at the fingertips of the user
Increased user engagement
By allowing users to work the way they want, when they want

Why Haven't You Transitioned?
“We’re not ready totackle mobile yet”• Current Enterprise BI solution doesn’t
support mobile
• Lack of skilled resources
• No mobile security defined
• Not ready to support mobile infrastructure“We have no mobile standards and too many devices”
“What is the ROI on this mobile BI project?”
• Business case not compelling enough
• Cannot solidify adequate executive support
• No clear change agent
• Can’t decide which mobile devices/platforms to support
• No corporate BYOD policy

Overcoming These Hurdles

Overcoming These Hurdles
Leverage your software and services vendors to help you quantify the value of the initiative
If devices are company-issued, consider limiting options in order to establish a de facto standard over time
Use your executive champion to trigger an enterprise clarification of BYOD policy
Identify an executive champion for the initiative who will evangelize and drive change
Consider using 3rd party software and services to accelerate the initial project; learn from them
2
Begin by proposing a tightly scoped and limited release pilot to simplify implementation and minimize technical complexity

Common Mobile BI Implementation Challenges
Not fully considering the mobile user experience during design
Not starting with the best first mobile BI use case
Not enough time to address infrastructure, deployment, security issues
Not enough support from the business/user community
Just copying the old reports to a mobile app

Mobile BI Project Lessons Learned
Even if you are just enabling mobile delivery for a currently well established report or set of KPIs, there are still items to consider
1. Don’t just copy the old reports; Spend time to understand the functional aspects
Consider how the mobile form factor can transform the process of the current state
Are all the KPIs on the current reports used and necessary? What actions are being taken?
Are there unrelated KPIs that are being grouped together?
How are the related metrics used? What is the analytical workflow? Which metrics are viewed first (primary)? Which are viewed only if there are issues with the primary metrics (secondary)?
Would adding transactional capability streamline this process?
Could these metrics be embedded in a standalone mobile app for a specific purpose?

Focus heavily on the mobile user experience2

Mobile BI Project Lessons Learned
Due to the proliferation of consumer mobile apps, users have NO tolerance for a poor user experience on a mobile device
Think like a consumer using an app from the app store
Less is more: Make it very simple, but exceptional!
Performance should be the highest priority, even over most functional requirements
Know your audience and users: Who, When, Where, How they will be using the application
Leverage the capabilities of the mobile BI platform
2. Focus Heavily on the Mobile User Experience

2. Focus Heavily on the Mobile User Experience: Mobile UI Design
Consider the limited screen real estate
Less is more, only display most important information and navigation; Others can be buried deeper in the flow
Avoid temptation to add more since “That’s what they had before”

2. Focus Heavily on the Mobile User Experience: Mobile UI Design
Create an intuitive and analytical workflow
Do not clutter the screen
Use the Summary/Detail pattern or other similar mechanisms to allow an intuitive analytical workflow fitting the device

2. Focus Heavily on the Mobile User Experience: Mobile UI Design
Ensure that UI elements are sized appropriately for the use and mobile form factor
Consider the standard gestures and design for them

Mobile BI Project Lessons Learned
Start with a pilot; phase rollout over timepilot first > expanded pilot > full rollout
3. Start small initially and build momentum through success
Start with a process or use case that is well established in current stateThis will minimize the risk associated with adoption since the user will not be trying to learn the modified process and the new mobile workflow
One form factor (phone or tablet), limited device typesFor example, if most users will use smartphones and 75% have iphones start with iphone only to that sub user group

Mobile BI Project Lessons Learned
Mobile Infrastructure
There will inevitably be additional infrastructure needed to support the mobile application so make sure these items are addressed ahead of time with enough contingency for issues
4. Get the underlying deployment and security details worked out beforehand
Mobile Device Management
The selection and implementation will typically take longer than to build your first application of Mobile BI, so be sure this project begins in advance
BYOD Policy
Engage with Legal/HR to ensure this is ready and users have accepted the policy before go-live
Mobile Security
Work out the security architecture ahead of time. Your Mobile BI platform may have authentication and authorization mechanisms but these will have to integrated with the MDM tool if that is leveraged for the mobile security standard

Mobile BI Project Lessons Learned
5. Adoption is not a one-time event; Nurture it throughout
• Involve users in requirements definition
• Involve users in concept/prototyping
• Content tuned to roles• Timely data refreshes
• Consistent definitions• Info desired when away from office
Relevance
• Simplifies duties• Expands user’s capabilities
• Makes them more self-sufficient• Available anywhere, anytime
• Delivers desired value
Utility
• Intuitive user interface
• Easily accessible
• Fast response time• Uses common gestures
• High quality information
• End user training/documentation

Adoption
The users will feel:• Engaged
• Empowered
• Confident
• Excited• Clarity
• Valuable• Eager to drive value
• Freedom
WHAT is delivered HOW it is delivered
• Executive-level support
• Department-level support
• SMEs and liaisons allocated
• Sense of urgency
• Celebrating successes

Key Takeaways
1. Don’t overlook the functional aspects and the transformational nature of mobility
2. By starting small you can decrease the time to value and avoid wasted investment from not hitting the mark initially
3. The mobile user experience should be treated with a much higher priority than previously
4. Start early and allocate more time to establishing the mobile infrastructure
5. Engage users and the champions of the initiative from the beginning
