company’s core database for b2b marketing purposes. The Intelligent Data Services database

contains details of over 2 million businesses throughout the United Kingdom. As well as general

mailing and telephone details, the Intelligent Data Services database also includes specific

contact information on key decision makers within those companies. The purpose of this is to

enable customers to make contact with specific individuals within the businesses they are

targeting – depending on the nature of the product or service they are seeking to promote.

Intelligent Data Services states that the mailing and telephone information it holds is at least

97% accurate. Intelligent Data Services has a number of processes in place to maintain the

accuracy of its data. The company operates a rolling system to check the contact details of the

businesses on its database. It makes approximately 170,000 verification calls to businesses

each month. Intelligent Data Services also monitors official publications such as the London and

Edinburgh Gazette to check for status changes in respect of the businesses on its database.

Contact data is also validated against the Royal Mail Postal Address File and is regularly

checked against the Royal Mail’s ‘gone away’ files. Intelligent Data Services also holds over

850,000 email addresses on a ‘double opted-in’ database. This means that positive consent for

third party emailing is obtained by Intelligent Data Services over the phone. Emails are then

sent to these contacts – providing them with the opportunity to amend their details. Intelligent

Data Services then re—verifies these email addresses every eight weeks. This verification

includes a request for confirmation that each contact is happy to remain on the database.

Intelligent Data Services states that if it fails to achieve a 97% accuracy rating on any order from

a customer for mailing and telephone information, it will offer a 2-for-1 replacement on any

inaccurate records provided. Intelligent Data Services also guarantees that at least 90% of the

emails to the businesses on its email database will be delivered. If the company is unable to

achieve this, it offers an over-delivery on the subsequent order by 10%. Clients of Intelligent

Data Services include Zurich Group, Vista Print, TNT, the Times Newspapers and Proctor &

Gamble. In 2012, the Scottish Business Awards listed Intelligent Data Services as one of the

Top 90 Companies in Scotland.
