POSTER DECONSTRUCTION

Page 2: Insidious 2 poster deconstruction

Characters There are three characters on the poster, the first that I notice is the woman as she’s above the two other characters and her facial expression is also very eye catching and effective- so her terrified/surprised eyes, her gaping mouth and her body language (with her arms being wrapped protectively around the two young boys) indicates that she’s frightened. One of the boys is faced away from us and this creates a sense of vulnerability, as he’s faced away from the evil force that is scaring the other two characters, and the concept of something lurking behind you is a universal fear that the audience will familiarize with. The other boy is facing the viewer, he appears scared and a little dazed due to his gaping mouth, wide eye and clenched fist, this signifies that the boy is alarmed, tense and out of breath.

Positioning • The woman is positioned in a

protective stance, with her arms wrapped defensively around the children; this indicates that she’s the mother of these children. A part of her face is cut off by the poster, alike the child’s face that is half behind the other child’s head, this creates a sense of weakness as it displays that the characters are hiding and are scared. The characters appear to be backed up against a wall, emphasizing the fact that they are trapped by an evil force- this displays that there’s no way out.

Props • The mother is holding a

hammer with one hand and the other is being used to protect the children, this creates quite a contrast between the violence of the film and the innocence of the children, ultimately making the viewer more scared for the characters.

Costume• There isn’t much costume on show, but the

clothing the characters are wearing appears to be your average, casual modern-day clothing, indicating that this film is set in the present day. The mother is clearly quite beautiful, with the conventional long curly hair, natural makeup and pretty features- this indicates that she’s your conventional female who is married and has children, and this is reinforced by the wedding ring.

• However the wedding ring reminds those who have seen the first film that there’s a father/husband in the film, however he’s not in the poster protecting his family (which would be expected of the conventional father figure). This signifies to the audience that it could in fact be the father/husband that is the problem.

Colours and Lighting• the colours are mainly quite dark, connoting a sense of

malevolence and ambiguity. The grey of the characters clothing and the wall behind them produces a gloomy effect, indicating that the evil force is going to cause chaos and distress. The hammer is also grey; however it’s shiny and therefore stands out, emphasizing the horror genre of the film. The white typography really contrasts with the background, so it is easily readable, and the red text connotes a sense of pain and danger due to the fact that the colour red signifies blood. The characters shadow is obviously black, and it creates a sense of fear as it mirrors the fact that some evil force is leering over them.

• The lighting is very low key, connoting a feeling of mystery. The area of highlight appears to be beside the characters shadow, and this emphasizes the darkness of the shadow in contrast to the lighter area, overall making the area around the characters seem more frightening and dark.

Camera• The camera angle appears to be at a

neutral angle, indicating that the family in the poster are just average people, on the same level as the audience members. Ultimately this signifies to the viewer that supernatural occurrences can happen to anyone. The medium-close up of the shot clearly displays the characters terrified facial expressions, and the fact that the mother is looking up- this suggests that she’s vulnerable to the evil force that is looking down on her. The medium-close up also creates a sense of compactness, indicating further that these characters are trapped.

Typography• The wide, san serif typography looks quite intimidating due to how

prominent and wide spread it is, therefore creating a sense of power and threat. Due to the heading being placed sideways, this connotes an abstract effect, reflecting the abstract and supernatural force that is at work in the film. The line “It will take what you love most” is imperative and frightening, as it suggests that you have no choice, and there’s no way that you can protect your loved ones, indicating that the evil force is strong and dominating. Also, the date line “Friday the 13th” highlights the genre of the film, as this day is

universally known as an unfortunate and creepy day.
