Interactions with the Internet no longer happen solely by individuals using a computer. Users connect to the Internet with a mesh of devices such as mobile phones, sensors and machines because the ubiquity of TCP/IP over 3G, 4G and wireless networks enables different types of devices to send and receive data. The Internet is transitioning to the “Internet of Things”, where “things” interact with “things” with reduced, if any, human intervention. With the number of devices increasing, you require a scalable, reliable and cost-effective solution for connecting these devices to your enterprise.

IBM MessageSight helps deliver the performance, value and simplicity that organizations need to accommodate the multitude of devices, helping to process large volumes of events in near-real-time. MessageSight extends existing messaging networks with extreme transaction rates, more predictable lower latency and extensive scaling in the number of concur-rent devices that can be connected with timely information throughout the Internet of Things.

Various analysts and sources estimate that by the end of 2012, six to seven billion devices were connected to the Internet, with that number pro-jected to grow to 15 to 20 billion devices in 2015 and potentially to 40 to 50 billion by 2020. As a result, an astonishing amount of data is generated by these mobile phones, sensors and machines every day. Application owners and consumers, therefore, require large-scale connectivity and a high-speed communication solution to enable and capture near-real-time interactions between a multitude of connected devices and applications.

Unlike messaging appliances that merely consolidate traditional messaging services onto a convenient hardware form factor, MessageSight is specifically engineered to deliver an increased number of communications within and beyond the enterprise. This IBM solution is designed with specific optimization to accelerate more reliable messaging delivery with persistence qualities, reduce latency and provide higher and more predict-able throughput.

Scaling communication infrastructure for future business needsFive years ago mobile phones only communicated with other mobile phones and only sent data when prompted. Today, mobile phones can connect to almost any device, sharing and receiving information automatically. However, the future of connections in the Internet of Things (IoT) is not just about connecting people. Ultimately, machine-to-machine (m2m) communication helps enable a smarter planet. The ability of IBM MessageSight to handle and route tremendous volumes of messages makes it ideal for use by governments and organi-zations whose leaders seek to connect and infuse intelligence into cities and across industries such as automotive, healthcare and finance.

For instance, an automotive manufacturer can use IBM MessageSight to help manage the features and services of its automobiles. With thousands of sensors in each car, a dealer can now be notified when a “check engine” light turns on in a specific car. Based on the information transmitted by the engine sensor, the dealer could then notify the owner that there is a critical problem and they should get their car serviced immediately.

With IBM MessageSight organizational leaders can gain value:

●● ● Informed and near-real-time decisions to modify energy use or driving behavior.

●● ● Security-rich, bidirectional messaging that helps enable smarter, near-real-time decision-making.

●● ● More efficient messaging protocol to reduce bandwidth requirements and data plan costs.

●● ● Reduced cost of managing communications to devices.●● ● Saved time, effort and money for the home and

vehicle owner.

MessageSight helps organizations implement a wide variety of other cases, including:

●● ● Event-driven sensor networks●● ● Interactive mobile applications that include notifications●● ● WebSocket HTML5-based web applications●● ● Near-real-time data collection for big data analytics●● ● Scalable alerts and notification systems●● ● Higher-scale asynchronous publish and subscribe options for

service-oriented architectures

Key features of MessageSightBy employing this paradigm, MessageSight can help provide the following benefits.

Providing security-rich messaging using a policy-based approachYou can manage and secure multitudes of devices more easily with MessageSight, which uses a policy-based approach. Fine-grained authorization polices restrict access based on a combination of:

●● ● User or group●● ● Client ID●● ● Protocol●● ● Network interface●● ● Listening address or port, or both●● ● Client IP address or range●● ● Destination name of topic or queue

MessageSight supports messaging protocols that enable authen-tication through a local user store or LDAP servers. Support for SSL V3 and TLS 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 are standard with a FIPS 140-2 level 1 certified cryptographic module.

Employing open standards and protocols for greater flexibilityMessageSight supports the MQTT V3.1 specification, MQTT over HTML5 WebSockets and JMS 1.1 for inbound and out-bound messaging. MessageSight also supports conversion between protocols.

MQTT is a messaging protocol designed for wireless networks and devices where conserving device battery life, reducing network traffic and delivering reliable message over unreliable networks are key. MQTT is an open protocol with many free MQTT clients available for a wide range of mobile platforms.

With JMS support, MessageSight can connect to the enterprise using either a publish-and-subscribe or a point-to-point messaging model. Both protocols support persistent and non-persistent messaging. A list of IBM-supported clients can be downloaded at ibm.com/developerworks/community/ blogs/c565c720-fe84-4f63-873f-607d87787327/entry/download?lang=en

Enabling integration with your enterpriseNative support and direct support are provided to connect to and to extend IBM WebSphere MQ infrastructure. Through simple mapping, an appliance can be more easily set up to exchange messages with one or multiple WebSphere MQ Queue Managers. In addition, connectivity to IBM Integration Bus is supported through either the JMS or MQTT nodes.

Providing quicker, simplified deploymentConfiguration can be completed within thirty minutes. A web-based, command line interface is provided with reduced configuration. Administration and monitoring are optimized for scale using a policy-based approach.

Providing higher reliability and performanceHigh-availability configurations are supported when using a pair of MessageSight appliances. In addition, high-message throughput for millions of messages a second and over one million concurrently connected devices can be supported for each MessageSight appliance. Message latency is measured in microseconds and remains consistent over scale.

Enabling the messaging infrastructure for use in a DMZMessageSight is a rack-mounted hardened appliance form factor suitable for deployment in a DMZ. This IBM appliance has no user-accessible operating system and only accepts IBM signed and encrypted firmware. Only configured services can enable listening ports with no routing throughout the network interfaces. This IBM appliance consists of encrypted f lash and storage media and the f lash is locked down and tied to system use.
