i2CAT has intensely developed its research, developmentand innovation activities in the field of ICT and the FutureInternet throughout 2008. The projects carried out havemade possible the expansion of the collaboration betweenthe companies and the research groups, both from theFoundation itself and the Universities. Furthermore, they havealso promoted a new model of Open innovation whichinvolves the implication of the users in the innovationprocedures from its very beginning.

During this year, in which we have been affected by thecredit crunch, there have been several signs regarding theimportance of an innovation aimed to create new products, services and activities which enable a new and moresustainable development based on activities with a highlevel of specialisation whose objective is a global market witha high level of competence. In this framework, the researchand innovation in the ICT sector, and especially Internet -thefield in which i2CAT focuses its activity- is essential for thedevelopment of a productive and strategic network for thecountry.

The significant growth of i2CAT throughout 2008, which wasclose to 20%, and its implication in several projects both atnational, European and international level with the

participation of more than 65 companies and 14 researchgroups of the universities integrated in i2CAT’s board, highlights the vitality of the entity and the huge promotion ofthe innovation of the ICT sector. The activity, locally (with thecompanies and the Catalan public administration) as wellas globally, has been large and there has been importantinternational projects with the main research centres in thefield of Internet from USA, Canada, EU and Korea. Finally, there has also been a close collaboration with the publicadministration in innovative and strategic projects for thetechnological development of Catalonia.

The research in the fields of Optical Networks, P2P, SensorNetworks, Virtualization, High Definition Services and NewModels of Network Innovation has borne important fruits andhas also enabled the different innovation areas of theFoundation to apply their results to a great amount ofprojects carried out together with companies and institutions.

During 2008, there was also the creation of a new technologytransference and product commercialisation area, which willenable to value in a faster and more efficient way theperformed developments and will facilitate the relationbetween the companies in the field of the transference ofthe technology and the knowledge.

In the next years, i2CAT wants to continue promoting theresearch and the collaborative innovation in the field ofInternet together with the different agents and institutions, both at a local and international level, with similar purposesand aimed to contribute to the transference of knowledgeand the promotion of the development of the ICT sector ofour country.

4.3 PROJECT FINANCING WITH COMPETITIVE FUNDS

Throughout 2008, there has been an important increase ofthe financing obtained with competitive funds and billingservices.

Developed actions

Submission of proposals in different calls at national, stateand European level. The obtained funds among thedifferent submitted forms in 2007 and 2008 for projects inorder to be carried out last year were 918,259 euros, whichrepresents an increase by 69’8% regarding the onesobtained in 2007.

The obtained funds in each call have been the followingones:

European Union: 343, 370 eurosPlan Avanza MITYC: 439, 020 eurosCIDEM: 135, 869 euros

It is worth pointing out that 60% of the obtained funds wereacquired in 2007 calls. Furthermore, the percentage ofgranted projects of the total presented decreasedconsiderably in 2008 calls. Concerning the billing services, there was a significant upturn with regard to 2007. Thetotal amount exceeds 1,000,000 euros, which representsan increase of more than 40% regarding 2007.

The upturn of the billing services to companies and entities ismotivated for the participation in different high-scale Cenitprojects and for the orientation in taking part in the projectsas subcontractors instead of doing it as collaborativeparticipants.

General description and goals

The MANTICORE II project is developed on the satisfactoryresults achieved by its predecessor. This project is aimedto create a network operator and end-user service inwhich they can customize the configuration of their own

IP network, either physical or logical. The main idea is thatan infrastructure provider can give permissions to part orthe entire own infrastructure to a third one, delegating thecontrol and the management of the devices for a periodof time. Then, new business models between theinfrastructure providers and the ones from the services areestablished. This service has to be strong enough to beused in network production by real users. In order to carryout these aims, we use the new verstion of IAAS framework(with all the avantages provided by the newimplementation: modurability, extensibility, compatibilityand interoperability with the other solutions based onIASS).

Most important innovative and research elements

The support in iPv6 and protocols is improved, apart fromenabling internal or external routing protocol configu-ration. Furthermore, it will enable the establishment anddestruction of VPNS and paths with QoS. Users will be ableto divide the physical routers into different logical routers.Besides, they will be able to visualize/edi the status of eachkind or several infrastructures.

Industrial and/or social benefits of the project

•It contributes to the test and results regarding the routingprotocol standardizations.

•It enables new business models between the servicesproviders and the infrastructure.

•Interoperability between the different authenticationand autorization infrastructures.

•It establishes a strong system which enables the creationof logical resources in order to be deployed in acommercial network.

General description and goals

Phosphorus is a European project focused on the supplyingof optical on-demand network resources (both inimmediate availability and in advance), end-to-end and

through multiple heterogenic domains, by interconnectingthe different advanced optical communication networksfrom all Europe. The project enables the transparentinteroperation between the different existing resourceprovisioning systems (NRPS – Network Resource ProvisioningSystem) and a new Grid-GMPLS control plan, for the Gridapplications and the Middleware. Furthermore, Phos-phores wants to achieve the interoperability with othersimilar initiatives from all over the world, such as AutoBAHNfrom Géant2 or IDC from Internet2 and the compatibilitywith the future supply standard interfaces, such as theNetwork Service Interface of the Open Grid Forum.

Most important innovative and research elements

The project defines an architecture and all the neededinterfaces which ensure the creation of end-to-endoptical paths between different resource provisioningsystems (Argia/UCLP, Argon, DRAC and GMPLS/G2MPLS). Similarly, this project improves the greatamount of GMPLS protocols and consequently itenables the management of the Grid resources directlyfrom the control plan (Grid-GMPLS or G2MPLS).Moreover, the project offers network resources to the

Grid applications, in an abstract way, and it enables usto make reservations.

Industrial and/or social benefits of the project

This project has enabled the interconnection of i2CAT’snetwork with the main provisioning networks and systems, present in Europe and America. Phosphorus enables thesignaling between the different domains and creates anGMPLS control plan with extensions for the absolutelyinnovative GRID.

General description and goals

The main objective of DREAMS project is to develop anoptical network with DWDM technology and ROADM

nodes. There is going to be two implementations of thecontrol plan: one based on GMPLS and another onebased on ARGIA (the ancient UCLP) software. Besides, there will probably be an implementation of threeROADM nodes, creating a ring network through two fiberswith protection and automatic restoration.

Most important innovative and research elements

• Development and elaboration of three ROADM nodes:these nodes enable the commutation of the opticalchannels through the extraction ports (drop) and the“colorless” insertion (add) (capable of operating withany group of optical channels).

• Development of GMPLS software: it will consist in pro-viding the network of an on-demand bandwidth systemwith protection.

• Argia: a system which enables users to virtualize andmanage network resources so that several users canalso operate independently and simultaneously on theirassigned resources and without interfering in the otherones.

Industrial and/or social benefits of the project

DREAMS gives us an approach of the model of the futuretelecommunications network: agile, dynamic, intelligentand reconfigurable networks. The option of the GMPLScontrol plan provides intelligence and automatism to thenetwork, as well as optical connections in a dynamic wayand with the required QoS. The version based on ARGIAprovides a remote management of the equipments andthe virtualization of the physical network resources, thenany ARGIA user will be able to manage his virtualizedresources in order to created and adapted network to hisrequests. Thus, there is an achievement of the implentationof optical networks with reduced maintenance andmanagement costs.

Other important aspects

The DREAMS project will evolve in order to create apermanent test network through the installation ofROADM nodes in a scenario distributed with nodes indifferent places of the metrolopitan area of Barcelona.

General description and goals

The Anella Cultural (Cultural Ring) is a project that tries tointerconnect all the Catalan public cultural centres with thegoal of putting the country on top of the use of newtechnologies in the Culture. Based on the physical connec-tion of cultural centres through broadband Internet andthe building of services and metodologies supported on this

network, we actually want to take a step forward regardingthe modification of the traditional modus operandi of allthe involved agents in the cultural field, both culturemanagers or technicians, artits, producers or institutions.

Most important innovative and research elements

For some reason, the cultural sector has always beenaway from the new technologies. Thanks to this project, and with a year and a half of performance, necessaryand absolutely innovative developments have beendetected. Actually, they are aligned with other research

proposals coming from the audiovisual or the techno-logies network sector.

Industrial and/or social benefits of the project

The Cultural Ring project is awaking the innovation spiritbetween the several involved agents – creators, companies and cultural managers and town councilors –and they are going to incorporate it in their daily practice.Besides, it also represents a novelty in the field of publicculture: for the first time, a research, development andinnovation (R+D+i) uses these cultural activities as a rawmaterial. The decentralization of the culture, the reductionof the events, an infrastructure for the cultural experimen-tation and the opportunities offered by the network inorder to cope with all the territory are the main benefits ofthe Cultural Ring.

General description and goals

The main objective of this project is to avoid the gradualsocial exclusion that suffer the people who take care ofhigh dependent people, through the creation of networksthat facilitate their interpersonal relations such as thecontinuity in the psyco-social support group programs, inorder to minimize the giving up of the carers of dependentpeople and, therefore, avoiding the institutionalization ofthe patients, trying to carry on with their permanence aslong as it is possible.

Problems

According Imserso if we have a look at the Llibre Blanc dela Dependència (2004) data, in the middle of 2010, theassignment of resources depending on the dependencedegree of the population shows us that at least the 64,4%of the dependent group (with at least one moderateddependence), will stay at their home addressesaccompanied by other people who assume their care, the so-called “informal carers”.

Scope

This pilot project will be carried out in Cornellà deLlobregat. In fact, in this town, illustrative projects of theProdep of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Programe forthe promotion of the personal autonomy and attention tothe dependent people) are carried out, in order todetermine the attention model to the use dependencyall over the autonomous community territory. There is also“Cornella Cuida” /”Cornellà Cares”, focused on thecontinue assistance to the “informal carers” through theprogramation of events for psyco-social formation andsupport groups.

Therefore, the familiar units of dependent people whotake part in this pilot project are direct beneficiaries of theproject. Once the project is finished, we foresse themaintenance the service for the users who take part in thisproject and extend it in the municipality as a part of thecity council portfolio services. Thus, all the people withdishabilities of the town are indirect beneficiaries aspotential users of the proposed telehome care services.

The result was the new platform called Living Lab,the Living Labs network of Catalonia.

Most important innovative and research elements

The main objective of the project was achieved: creatinga Catalan network of living labs, CatLab, which comprisesthe following living labs in Catalonia: i2CAT Foundation,22@, Fundació Bdigital, Citilab of Cornellà de Llobregat,Fundació Tecnocampus Mataró, Neapolis-Vilanova andFundació Gufi.Net. Regarding the research aims, therewas the establishment of the start of the art on new Open

Digital Innovation Models and on the Methodologies todeal with the design and building of Living Labs, and anethnographic study, based on fieldwork techniques aboutthe current members of the Catalan network of the LivingLabs.

Industrial and/or social benefits of the project

There was a beginning of a “Livingatization” process ofdifferent projects of the involved institutions, which hasenabled to apply new models and methodologies in realprojects, by developing digital tools in order to favorize theusers participation in the innovation processes and thelearning of the same new technologies organizations.

Other important aspects

All the Living Labs of the Catlab project have beenoficially recognized within the European Network of LivingLabs. Thus, Catalonia is the leading community in theSpanish state and one of the first in Europe due to its LivingLabs network.
