How to Deploy Information Rapidly in a Face-to Face Stand-Up Meeting
What is a stand-up meeting?
The purpose of a stand-up meeting is to quickly and efficiently connect with team members to disseminate critical information. Modeled after the flight crew team huddle at flight time, members gather to share or review critical information.
Some meetings begin with an inner circle of people around the main table and an outer circle of people as observers – those in the inner circle are expected to stay for the meeting and beyond, those in the outer circle are there to get some basic knowledge but have no need to stay longer term.

Steps to Hold a Stand-up Meeting
1. Eliminate Chairs – Gather as a group in a huddle.
2. Stay Agenda-Driven – Keep the meeting brief (less than 10 minutes) and focused by sticking to an agenda.
3. 3 Finger Check-in – Test the group’s understanding or consensus by doing a three finger check-in:
– 3 fingers: I am 100% clear on or committed to the proposed direction/decision.
– 2 fingers: I am clear about or committed to the direction/ decision, but have concerns or questions.
– 1 finger: I do understand or cannot support this direction/decision.

4. Parking Lot – any non-agenda issues/concerns or items that come up during the meeting should be deferred to a “parking lot.” The parking lot is a list of extra items that should be addressed after the meeting or tabled to the next meeting.
Put one person in charge of managing the parking lot. When the group gets off task on an item, or it is important enough to discuss at greater length, “park it.” Then ask those who need to talk about the issues to meet at a later date.
5. End the meeting on time, and ask those who need to stay to stick around for more sharing.
