HAND DRAWN ANIMATION

By Sara Khan

WHAT IS HAND DRAWN ANIMATION?Is the oldest and historically the most popular form of animation. In a traditionally-animated cartoon, each frame is drawn by hand and is also called traditional animation.

Autour d'une Cabine - Emile Reynaud 1895

AnalysisThis film is one of the first that came out, that was hand drawn animation. As you can tell the quality of the film was not very good, and the images sometimes didn't flow and merge into each other like in image 1.The film has no sound in it except for a soundtrack in the back. Also there is not much that happens in the storyline, because hand drawn animation was so new ,the first films were quite simple and didn't involve many characters or plots.

Gerald McBoing-Boing (Robert Cannon, 1950)

AnalysisAs Years went on by hand drawn animation began evolving slowly with much sharper images, with vibrant colours and much more storylines and plots.

In the film above there is much more detail in the drawing and the film flows very smoothly when cutting into different scenes. The first image shows how they actually start drawing the character with the basic features.

Andreas Deja on The Princess and the Frog-2009

AnalysisThe princess and the frog is the latest hand drawn animation, and as you can see everything has improved since the latest films, the tiniest details are shown in the characters, objects and sceneries, there are colours everywhere ;vibrant, soft and real like. The film flows perfectly with many characters and storylines.
