Competition winning entry for a Hotel and Conference Center New York, NY with TEN Arquitectos

Located on the Hudson River at the confluence of three New York City neighborhoods, this project funnels energy towards a destination hotel cum urban resort by creating a new ground plane atop the old structure. Operative procedures are used in the base building in order to carve negative volumes of space that connect new to old, physically and visually. The ground floor’s many loading docks are seen as stalls, creating a setting for much needed green market space, and the many gener-ously sized freight elevators provide public and private connections into creative office spaces. The vertical organization gradiates vertically from public to semi public to exclusive.

Private Residence New York, NY with TEN Arquitectos

Using the roofscape of the two side car base buildings of One York as bookends, this home’s brief dictated large, various, and very modern entertainment spaces combined with private spaces devoted to health and well being. The indoor/outdoor nature of the resulting program offers moments of socialization, reflection, views, and most importantly, a play on the hu-man sense of touch as materials are used effectively to accentuate the different types of uses. The conceptual hearth of the project is a rectilinear box encased in custom leather, housing service and “wet” functions, including bathrooms, kitchen, and three different wet bars. The master bathroom was conceived as a cave-like space, “carved” into solid stone (as seen at top this page.) A three-floor stair was punctuated by the use of a proprietary material allowing for a constant play of light that interacts with vertical movement. Detailing was rigorous, allowing for seamless fusion of state of the art technology and ultimate comfort, “A Giant Swiss Watch.”

Hotel and Conference Center Ann Arbor, MI with TEN Arquitectos

This project is part of a new investment by the local authorities into creation of a downtown public “hub” taking advantage of the University of Michigan’s resources and the state’s “Cool Cities” initiative. Adjacent to a remodeled downtown public library, a new conference center is raised above a new public plaza, and connected physically and programmatically with the host structure, creating a mix of public uses and procession of spaces. A new hotel and office tower sits on this pedestal using the horizontal volume as a base for an amenities level serving both private and public functions.

Environmental Learning Center Seattle, WA with MITHUN

The Brightwater water treatment facility in King County, Washington will be a LEED Gold certified complex, aimed at sustain-ably treating water to over 2 million residents initially. A four-phase project, the facility will add new facilities as populations increase. The point project for the Brightwater Water Treatment Facility, The Environmental Education and Community Center (EECC) will be a demonstration project both in terms of sustainability and design. As an education center, the facility will be a completely off-grid LEED GOLD building driven by a small cogeneration facility, with elements of the building itself serving as an experiential learning tool. As such, the design of the building transcends typical “Northwest Style” Architec-ture with deep overhangs and shed roof, transforming the building into foldable roof planes serving public and educational uses which reflect the landscape design, with “side cars” housing services. Demonstrated throughout are the design and comfort ability of water, serving as reflecting pool, evaporative cooling instrument, and nourishment for a variety of seedling planted within green roofs.

Aurora Ave. Townhomes Seattle WA with MITHUN

An incredible view over Lake Union to the East and is the starting point for this housing project set within a landscape. A combination of two different zoning lots, the project was designed and constructed under strict budget constraints. The family-friendly townhomes shown here are larger two to three story units with abundant daylight arranged around a central landscaped courtyard. This space acts as a community zone where public benches and private vegetable gardens bring residents outside. On the other side of the courtyard a live/work building was built as a barrier to high-traffic Aurora Ave. Utlizing the creative energy in the nearby Fremont neighborhood, this portion of the project attracts a diverse crop of new economy entrepreneurs. Parking is situated below the landscaped courtyard, eliminating excess vehicular flow through the site.
