Our grant writer Brisbane is very experienced indebunking the myths of grant writing for non profitorganisations. There are many myths around that reallyneed to be addressed to set those running non profitsstraight and to reinforce that a good quality grant writer isworth their weight in gold.

Plain wrong – yes Government cuts have been savagerecently at both the State and Federal Government levelsand yes loads of organisations have had their recurrentfunding cut and yes some funding programs have beencancelled or disbanded but there still are Governmentfunding opportunities at a Local, State or Federal level, there still are opportunities through commercial entitiesand there certainly are opportunities available throughTrusts and Foundations.

Wrong again – competition is fierce BUT if you developgreat projects that attract the attention of funders thenfunding is very achievable.

Page 6: Grant Writing - Myths

Large non profits generally are likely to have more successwith larger funding amounts but this is purely becausegenerally they have more larger projects which needfunding. Small non profits should certainly consider small, medium and large funding opportunities – anyopportunities at all. If your organisation and project tickALL the boxes as outlined in the grant guidelines then anapplication should certainly be considered.

The number of funding programs that fund wages orongoing is certainly not extensive but there areopportunities to include “administration” costs in somegrant opportunities and this is where you can includewages/operational costs.

Page 8: Grant Writing - Myths

This is clearly the thought process of some organisations.Grant funding is generally tied to a project and must bespent on that project and nothing else. So normallywinning funding wontbe the panacea for a strugglingorganisation.

Grant writing is not easy but it isn’t rocket science either. There are courses available that can assist to train theinexperienced but the one real secret of grant writing isread the guidelines, read the guidelines and then read theguidelines.

Page 10: Grant Writing - Myths

This is very easy to debunk. An hour of research willidentify a heap of potential funding opportunities you canaccess and if you plot these on a calendar giving you amonth’s notice before closing date – problem solved. Alsothere are lots of grant databases out there you can sign upto which have information about all sorts of grants. Thiscan be a very cost effective way of finding out about whatgrants are available and when the grant programs close.

While this is a myth – it obviously can help your case if youdo know someone with influence. But thousands oforganisations every month with grant funding acrossAustralia and have no inside help.

Page 12: Grant Writing - Myths

WRONG! If you receive grant funding it MUST be spentexactly as you outlined in your grant application. If youidentify that you need to change and purchase somethingdifferent you must identify this in writing to the relevantfunding program and get approval back in writing BEFOREyou spend money on the new item.
