GREEN CHEMISTRY

13

Key facts

• EU policies are orienting such a sector

• Huge private investments

Perspectives

• Highly significant industrial leaderships

in specific sectors (biofuels,

biomaterials)

Crisis in the sector of traditional chemistry as a key opportunity to focus resources and investments in the field of high added-value biobased products

Bioeconomy declined in biorefineries, using renewable resources of agricultural origin not in competition with food for the realization of innovative added-value products (biochemicals and bioplastics)

Bring the production of raw materials back to Italy and reducing the strong dependence on imports

Reconversion of decommissioned and not competitive sites into biorefineries

• Versalis (Eni) is the largest Italian chemical company, and

leader in the production of intermediates; in the field of chemistry

from renewable sources Versalis is active with important JVs and

partnerships (biobutadiene, natural rubber from guayule, vegetable

oils, bioisoprene…)

• Novamont born as a Montedison research center, it is a

world leader in the field of bioplastics from renewable sources.

Novamont mission consists in developing materials and

biochemicals by activating biorefineries integrated in the local

areas ensuring an efficient use of resources along the life cycle,

with social, economic and environmental benefits.

• Beta Renewables (JV Biochemtex, TPG,

Novozymes) a company belonging to the group M&G, is a

global leader in the development and engineering of technologies

and biochemical processes based only on the use of non-food

biomass as an alternative to fossil resources such as oil.

Case study - Green Chemistry Innovation Infrastructure

Green Chemistry site in Porto Marghera

The renovation of one of the most important

petrochemical sites in Italy is going through green

chem. investments. Versalis is active also through a

partnership with Elevance Renewable Science Inc., to

provide world–scale plants and new technologies

oriented to bio-chemical intermediates and vegetal oils

based products such as detergents, bio-lubricants and

chemicals for oil industry.

Matrica - Biorefinery in SardiniaStarting from agricultural raw materials and using

world-first technology developed by Novamont and

Versalis, Matrìca (50% JV Novamont Versalis) has

created an innovative range of bioproducts (bio-

plastics, bio-lubricants, home and personal care

products, plant protection, additives for the rubber

and plastics industries, food fragrances, etc.)

PROESA - 2° gen. Biomass in Piemonte

Proesa™ “second-generation” biomass

technology allowing the use of lignocellulosic

biomass to obtain fuel and chemicals out of the

food chains at competitive costs compared to

fossil fuels (oil, natural gas). It is the result of an

investment of over 150 million Euro, started by

Biochemtex in 2006. The technology is protected

by 14 patent families.

Messages from Italy…

18

Cleantech innovation in Italy is very significant even if suffers of structural

issues to be faced and gradually solved

• Weakness of the general innovation drivers (entrepreneurship attitudes, VC,

dedicated funds…)

• Slow transition to commercialization stage

Against these issues some strenghts are

• Significant CleanTech specific innovation drivers (due to specific regulations

and incentives)

• Huge support infrastructures

The establishment of lasting relationships with international partners is a key

topic to exploit the huge potential

Environment Park and Progetto Manifattura are part of the Global Innovation

Network launched by LACI
