GIRACT Introduction Geneva, Switzerland

The starch industry is one of the world’s largest transformers of agricultural raw

material, producing 78.7 mio tons of primary starch (at 12% moisture) when Giract

published its earlier starch supply study in 2013. This was up from 62 mio tons

in 2010. The many possible derivatives have long been driving the growth of the

industry, allowing it to respond with great flexibility to changing issues, be they

global raw material availability, trade regulations, new technologies or end-use

sector dynamics. The testimony is a remarkable average 4% annual growth over

30 years.

The main concerns for the global starch industry in 2013 were:

• The affordable and guaranteed availability of sufficient agricultural raw material, especially in view of the fast growing starch

demand from Asian economies and the competition for raw material from bio-ethanol producers, notably in the USA

• The weakening competitiveness of starches and derivatives as the ingredient of choice in many end-use sectors due to

growing concerns about cost-efficiency, impact on health and ‘naturalness’ (e.g. GMO)

• High oil prices are a particular concern for the industry as these negatively impact both raw material prices and

competitiveness of the starch industry:

− High demand for alternative fuels raises raw material prices

− Higher energy/transport costs decrease the competitiveness of starch derivatives (also in sectors where starch

competes with oil derivatives)

• The possible role that new emerging global starch competitors may play in the global starch supply scene and the

impact this may have on the major new players in the large end-user industries

Thus, the traditional patterns in starch production as well as the importance of Western players and markets are

seriously affected, both in terms of product portfolios and players. As these factors continue to affect the sector, it is

time once again to take stock of new opportunities and threats before making any new strategic decisions. This report

thus attempts to provide a comprehensive picture of actual global starch production and trade, by product and area,

and explore which key factors are likely to influence the forecast for 2020.

Giract, the ingredients and technologies specialist and leader in

market analysis of starches and their derivatives, has published six

landmark studies since 1996 which pulled together starch supply by

type of raw material and player across the world. These studies have

been a reference for all players in the industry and for key end-users.

The present update, to be published in 2015, will take into account the

significant changes that have occurred across the world in the last few

years, and will act as an important tool in your strategic planning.

Starch is a major building block in modern societies and its use continues to expand in areas with strong

economic growth. Starch derivatives, including glucose syrup and HFCS, are used widely across many

industries.

GIRACT Objectives of this study Geneva, Switzerland

Primary starch, Natural & Modified starch and Starches & Derivatives

4

To identify starch and derivative production by key country/region, type of raw material, type of starch and starch derivative and key producer

To evaluate trade patterns of different types of starches and derivatives

To estimate availability of starches and derivatives by key country/region and of starch by type of raw material

To forecast global trends in starches and derivatives to the year 2020
