Patti Duncan!Manager, Instructional Implementation!
Ge#ng started with STEM in your classroom
@yoyosciteach!
Why STEM?
What IS….
How do we get started?
Change is hard!
Every day, students travel from class to class, being exposed to content in isolated environments
They view learning as an assembly line… individual packages without cohesiveness
They struggle with seeing concepts as part of a whole package.
Which makes it difficult for them to apply their learning to real world situaDons
Do We Teach Skills?
Skills are not taught…. they are developed
How are skills developed?
Prac%ce Prac%ce Prac%ce
Cut The Rope
How do we get students to develop these skills in school?
Plan With Skills in Mind

• Identify shelters, reasons for shelters and questions about shelters
Get them to make observa9ons
Get them to ask ques9ons
Give them problems to solve

Knex for K-‐8 math
MAKE them figure it out
It doesn’t maLer how you learned, just make sure I am a problem solver!
Get them working together
Build collaboraDon into daily rouDnes
Give them experiences
Camp InvenDon-‐Using evidence to explain my decisions and invenDon
Camp InvenDon teamwork
Encourage them to create
Encourage them to present/publish
Compe99on is a GOOD thing
Science Olympiad
Odyssey of the Mind
1080 Camp-‐Who knew motorsports could be so cool?
1080 Reverse engineering challenges and compeDDons
