NOTES ON CONSERVING LAND

As the country develop the demand for land to build houses, industries and other facilities will naturally increase.

while these developments benefit the people, the country’s forests and other nature areas should be protected .

the government need to make plans for conserving land.

Conserving lands refers to the careful use of land resources to ensure that damage is kept to a minimum.

One way of conserving land is to set aside land as NATURE RESERVE, where land is carefully manage to protect its wild life, plants and other natural features and to provide special opportunities for study and research.

IN SINGAPORE

• 5% of the total land area is set aside as nature reserve e.g. Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.

• It is located along the north-western coast of Singapore as it is a home to 126 species of bird as that can only be found in the area, it is protected for its NATURAL HERITAGE.

Home to over 500 species of tropical flora and fauna, the 130-hectare conserved wetland habitat is also a "refuelling point" for birds on the East Asian Australasian Flyway.

• The conserved wetland is also a site of international importance for migratory birds. Well constructed hides and boardwalks provide a close-up view of flora and fauna in the reserve for nature lovers.
