Electrical insulators are electrical equipment, which restrict the flow of electricity from current carrying cables
towards transmission and distribution poles by acting as a resistance between current carrying cable and utility
pole. As a result, insulators are widely used in power transmission and distribution networks.
Types of Electrical Insulators
Glass Insulator Porcelain InsulatorComposite Insulator
There are three types of electric insulators - porcelain insulators, composite insulators and glass insulators.
These insulators are different from each other based upon material used during manufacturing process, electrical
properties such as temperature resistance, dielectric strength, etc.
Porcelain Insulators: Porcelain insulators are widely used insulators, which are manufactured by mixing
aluminum silicate, plastic kaolin, fledspar and quartz. Porcelain insulators are non porous, capable of
withstanding high voltage stress and suitable for use in areas with heavy pollution.

Glass Insulators: Glass insulators are made up of tough annealed glass. Tough glass offers higher dielectric
strength and tensile strength as compared to porcelain insulators. Due to its transparent nature, glass
insulators do not heat up easily, which makes it suitable for use in extremely hot regions such as deserts.
Composite Insulators: Composite insulators are light weight insulators, which have glass fiber reinforced
epoxy resin and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) as major components. Composites insulators
have number of advantages such as higher flexibility, which reduce chances of breakage of insulator, and high
tensile strength than porcelain insulators. Due to their low cost and ability to withstand high polluting areas,
composite insulators are widely used in power distribution network in urban areas such as cities, industrial
zones, refineries, etc.
Insulators have their applications in transmission and distribution lines, which have different voltage ratings.
As a result insulators are manufactured with different ratings such as low voltage insulators, medium voltage
insulators and high voltage insulators. Low voltage insulators are mainly used in distribution networks that
provide electricity to residential users. Medium voltage insulators are used in commercial and industrial
locations, while high voltage insulators are used in power transmission networks.

TechSci Research has scrutinized various published documents from following key sources in order to fill the
data gaps and verify information being collected through primary research surveys.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of the study was to understand the present market and forecast insulators
market in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
APPROACH & SOURCES: In order to forecast the market for insulators in GCC countries, both top down and
bottom up approach has been used. Multiple employees from the following companies have been interviewed
through telephonic conversations in order to extract and verify information being collected at the source.

In the beginning, a brief study of the power sector in GCC countries was conducted, which includes analysis
of information such as location, capacity and transmission and distribution infrastructure, followed by current
status such as expected year of commissioning along with expansion plans of infrastructure projects such as
real estate projects and various housing projects/schemes.
Moreover, detailed and in-depth scrutiny of information was done to understand each and every policy or
external or internal factor that could increase or decrease consumption of electrical power in the region. For
this various documents related to energy sector were studied, followed by a detailed assessment of
renewable power sector and its impact on insulators business in GCC countries.
Finally, region specific electricity consumption scenario was identified and growth in GCC insulators market
was forecast. Due to increasing demand supply gap for insulators in the region from domestic insulator
manufacturing companies, demand is being addressed through global leading players operating in the
country through subsidiary companies.
The study has been carried out considering various aspects of the insulators market in the GCC region:

To extract data for insulators, primary research surveys were conducted with key end users industries and
insulator manufacturers, to assess the past market trend. However, for forecasting the market for the
insulators in the region, following assumptions were made -
1. Growth in infrastructure and industrial sector is expected to drive demand for new power distribution lines
resulting in increased demand for insulators.
2. Construction of desalination plants is projected to lead to development of power evacuation infrastructure to
supply power to plants thus driving need for insulators.
3. Upcoming power generation projects is projected to result in growth of transmission and distribution network
thereby generating opportunities for increased sales of insulators.
Considering these assumptions, our dedicated team of industry experts has comprehensively monitored and
analyzed various aspects of insulators market in GCC countries. The team has analyzed various industry
segments and speculated a positive future for insulators market in the region. Taking into consideration,
developments, capital investments, government support, etc., our team of analysts has provided a prudent
analysis of the industry’s performance in the future.

GCC Insulators Market to Reach $ 409 Million by 2021
According to TechSci Research report “GCC Insulators Market By Rating, By Type, Competition Forecast &Opportunities, 2011 - 2021”, insulators market in GCC is projected to reach US$ 409 million by 2021, on account ofincreasing investments in power projects driven by expanding population base, growing manufacturing sector, andrapid expansion of infrastructure projects such as railways, sea ports, etc. Insulators are widely used in transmissionand distribution networks to prevent energy loss by acting as a barrier between current carrying cables andsupporting towers. Over the next five years, anticipated expansion of transmission and distribution networks in GCCnations to supply power from source of generation to demand location is projected to drive demand for insulators inthe region.
On the basis of ratings, GCC insulators market is categorized into low voltage insulators, medium voltage insulatorsand high voltage insulators. Low voltage insulators segment accounts for the largest share in the region’s insulatorsmarket on account of rapid expansion of low voltage distribution lines to cater to the growing electricity demandfrom the residential segment. Saudi Arabia dominates GCC insulators market due to growing housing sector andincreasing inclination of the country to diversify into non-oil sectors such as manufacturing, real estate, infrastructure, etc. Insulators market in the GCC region is dominated by global electrical equipment manufacturerssuch as ABB, NGK insulators and Toshiba Gulf FZE.
“Growing infrastructure developments and increasing focus of GCC nations to develop their manufacturing sector isprojected to boost demand for electricity in the region over the next five years. Moreover, growth of real estatemarkets in the region is driven by rapidly growing population base in these countries. In order to cater to rising needfor housing, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have initiated several housing and real estate projects. Moreover, in orderto address the rising demand for electricity, various major GCC countries have announced massive investments inpower sector projects, particularly in power transmission and distribution segment, which would drive demand forinsulators in the coming years.” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research basedglobal management consulting firm.
